When the cars come down from Boone covered with snow and salt in the winter I know we made the right choice.
Another advantage to the area you are looking at is US321. It is a limited access highway with little traffic from Hickory to Gastonia making the trek to the airport a breeze.

I must tell my husband about how easy it is to get to the airport. That was concerning me. When we went to Boone in April and we had snow but when we went down the MT it was about 20 degrees warmer.I would just love being so close to the mountain that we could go up anytime we wanted to, We just have to sell this house or rent it out.It is way to big for us and we hae a big pool also that costs so much to run.
I hae been looking at the weather in Lenoir and the temps minus the rain is like CA. Hot days but cool nights that I can open my windows again. One thing does worry me though is if you get bad storms with tornados. When we were up there that tropical storm followed us from FL and I did see some damage on some homes.Just wondering if I should get a home with a basement for safty.

Although we have occasional high straight winds and some SERIOUS lightening we seldom have tornados. They have happened but they are a freak thing. The tend to occur a little further from the mountains. Someone posted a term the other day I had never seen saying the foothills lay in a "rain shadow" of the mountains. Weather west of the mountains is more extreme in both heat and rain.
From Hickory to the airport using Us321south and I-85north (it actually runs due east there) you have only two lights in Gastonia.

We moved to FL three years ago and we hate it so we will have to sell our home and the market is not good down here.So that is another sticking point all I know is we are going to move even if we have to house payments for awhile.Fl homeowners INS if you can get it is sky high and Allstate as many other name ins co are leaving FL.
Where in Ca.?We lived in San Juaquin Valley, I hated it there! The weather is SOOO boring! Most people are so rude! Won't even make conversation in the grocery stores!I thought Washington state was the greatest until we came here!
Hopefully you can make NC your home soon also! Life's too short to not be happy!

I am sure I can but what you asy abut Ca I don't understand. We lived in pleasantom and then Danville and then Brentwood over a span of 25 years and I never found that to be the case. Here in Fl the people are nice but where my husband works the people just don't seem to want to get together.Very dissapointing.

Peebsmom is on a distinguished road
Hi,
We just got back from Valdese last week and thought it was a great little town. Looking to retire in a couple of years and thought that might be the area. Can you tell me anything else about the town? Where would a HS age child go and how are the schools in that area. Have a place at Lake Gaston now but not where I want to retire, schools are awful there. Thanks for anything else you can provide.

Default Which Town Did you Decide on?

My family live in Orlando, FL but want to buy a 2nd home in the mountains or at least see mountains. People talk about Lenoir being a great place and Lake James area seems to be too expansive.
Let me know, thanks. Sharon

I would not think that Lenior is a vacation spot. We live in Taylorsville and go to Lenior for shopping, restaurants etc. what are you looking for and how much are you looking to spend?

Melissa

How's the climate there? We're retired and we're looking for a place in NC that someone with emphysema could live without too much struggle.

Thanks!
