I'm seriously thinking of coming down to Pilot Mountain/Mount Airy beginning of October. First of all, I'm coming to visit a friend of mine I haven't seen in a long while. However, what do the locals suggest I do with the four or so days I'll be there? I know about Mayberry, etc. and will look into that but would sure like some suggestions - I want to do as much as possible. I like history, hiking, seeing anything new!! THANKS

Thought I'd ask here, instead of starting a new thread. My boyfriend and I were going to go to Asheville for a weekend in October, but have decided on going to Mt. Airy and Pilot Mountain instead. Is Mt. Airy worth checking out on a Sunday, or is everything closed? We might be bringing the dogs and if we get there early on Saturday and can't check in yet, we were going to go hiking with them. Then Mt. Airy on Sunday, but I'm afraid everything will be closed. Any suggestions on what to do while out there would be great, with or without the dogs. Thanks!

Nevermind, I'm used to Best Western allowing dogs, but I see this one doesn't. So I will leave them with my parents. So, what should we check out in Mt. Airy?

Main St - all the great shops

Then ride up hwy 52 toward Virginia - tons of flea markets and produce stands with neat stuff. A 15 minute ride will bring you to the Blue Ridge Parkway. Stop at the Fancy Gap Deli just under the Parkway for some great food. Right across the road you can access Devils Den for some hiking down to some caves.

We stayed in this little place when we visited there last year and had a great time. Rented one of the little cabins with a fireplace and did a lot of hiking. Pilot Mountain ("Mount Pilot" in the Andy Griffith Show) is literally across the street. Great breakfasts every morning, too.

Since you like history, you should definitely visit Old Salem in Winston-Salem. Don't miss Winkler's Bakery while you're there!

We're moving to the Triad, and visited Mt. Airy for the first time last Sunday. Many stores were open, many were closed. There was more to the town than I expected.

We then went through Fancy Gap (amazed at all the yard sales) and drove on the Blue Ridge Parkway for a bit. It was a gorgeous day, and the scenery was beautiful.

Can't really help OP much though, since all I know about the area is from that one day.
