Last year, I thought they passed a law that a frame could not obstruct the name of the state on the plate. Heck, I still see >50% of cars with these frames still on, but does anyone know if the law is still in effect? I know the grace period for warnings ended in Nov 2010. Thanks

Ummmmm....Nov 2010 is next month. Looks like fines start Dec 1.

I just checked my cars and I guess one of them is illegal based on how I understand this new law. The license plate frame on that car has a message section on the bottom that covers up the bottom 2/3 of the words "North Carolina" on my traditional NC tag. Looks like I'll have to get rid of that frame one of these days.

But, I think the law is good becuase it will also make those smoked out, plastic covers people use to hide their rear plate illegal as well. Now, if the cops only enforce it!

Oh, they will enforce it...just wait! 100 bucks a pop will get people to take them off in a hurry.

I went back to the dealer where I bought my last car and asked for a new one that is within compliance. If they want to advertise on my tail, they have to do it legally.

LOL I wonder if they filed you in a special category for discounts next time you buy a car if you paid for gas to go to their dealership so you can continue to advertise for them for free.

Why even go back to the dealer? Just remove it.

Anytime a dealer tries to bolt one on one of my cars, I tell them they can pay me to advertise or they can remove it.

I have seen a few folks with the state name covered. I mentioned this to them in conversation and many are not even aware. I also remind them it will be $100 fine if ticketed. There are also a lot of trailers on the road I see without plates and from what I hear it is usually the state police stopping unplated trailers...

It will be interesting to see how many folks get pulled over with the new "uncover the state name" law..

Keep in mind guys, in the article above it says the law as amended. Its actually a very subjective call now. Its up to law enforcement officers to determine if your tag can be read or not, as long as your info can be read, you should be fine. I'm not expecting there to be too many fines from this. Here's the amended language from the article.

"...A driver can't cover the plate "with any frame or transparent, clear or color-tinted cover that makes a number or letter included in the vehicle's registration, the State name on the plate, or a number or month on the registration renewal sticker illegible."

Illegible means that people can't read it. Even if a small slice of the state name is obscured, it might still be legible - and street-legal.

Who decides this? The cop who writes your ticket. If he or she can't read your license plate, you owe the state $100..."

I recently saw a car with a frame reading "NC Sheriff's Association 2010." It definitely covered the state name, which I thought was pretty funny. I wonder how the cops will handle that one.
