Im not sure you will see any at Topsail due to the ocean wind and lack of grassy fields in that area. The mountains and Piedmont are your best bet.

The date sounds good but as Sunny said that area might not be the best to see them. But you never know...good luck!

Years ago, on the way up North, we stopped in Intercourse, PA, in Amish country, at a B&B. That evening, we saw the most incredible sight: HUGE swarms of lightning bugs -- about 12 feet high by 9 feet wide, and they were thick -- several thousand bits of light. It was AMAZING! They lit up the yard.

Maybe it was because the Amish in the area don't depend on cars or lawn mowers and other gas-powered machines and maybe because of that, air pollution levels are far lower, and that enables the lightning bugs to thrive? I don't know. But it was an incredible sight, worthy of National Geographic. I wish I'd brought my camera.

(Yes, it was even more magical than Cary. )

Default June bugs

Don't confuse June bugs with Japanese beetles. Although they appear similar, June bugs are about double the size of beetles, which will devastate your flowers and garden.

I remember my siblings and I used to take their lights off and put them on our ears...silly kids. hey when u take their lights off do it cut their "lights out" just curious. If so, now I would see why I dont see as many as i used to as when I was a kis
