Fireflies/Lightning Bugs
Someone posted about fireflies and lightning bugs a while back.
This past week has been just great. Dusk and the little guys are flashing all over the place.
Last night the whole field behind our house was blinking like crazy.
Such a gentle ............ peaceful thing.
Doesn't take much to make me happy huh?

You can catch them get a jar poke holes in the lid just enough to let air in. They are really harmless but they do make your hands smell.

Yeah I was on the beach and I saw some. It was so cool to see them. My kids loved looking at them. In fact one got into my car. It was neat. So what does everyone really call them here in North Carolina because when I said Firefly the locals gave me a puzzle look and then I said lightning bug. They got it but then someone said June Bugs. So which is it?

A kid again
I also love them. I live out from the city and the light up the entire field and yard around the house. It always reminds me of those summer nights at grandma's house years ago.

Speaking of the June bugs...any suggestions on getting them to leave your plants alone? Thank Goodness they aren't the lightening bugs! I thought they only existed in Disneyland (specifically Pirates of the Caribean...I know, wrong spelling!)! We had one crawling around on our sliding door last night, better than TV!!!!

From what I was told here the June bugs don't hurt plants. Although I have read online that they do eat decomposing fruit. They also can harm your lawn. I have a thread here regarding Big green, flying bugs. There are a few good answers there regarding the June bugs. I feel a bit better about them knowing they apparently don't harm plants. I did read you can sprinkle Seven dust over your lawn and that should help. Can't say for sure yet as I have not tried it yet.

I was born in TN (where there are lots of lightnin bugs) then moved to WY (where there are non) My children remember seeing them when they were young and now want their children and grandchildren to see them. We are going to North Topsail Beach North Carolina the last week of May 2009. Please tell me there are beautiful lightnin bugs there and at that time. Thanks
