I saw a Chevron on US 74 last week near Shelby, kind of between Hendersonville and Charlotte. Not common in NC though. Haven't seen 76 stations here.

You're right! Found this (below). What are the common big name gas stations out there?

I seem to remember 76 stations more years ago, along with Gulf, but they are very rare now. I know you didn't ask about Sunoco, but they remind me of Sunoco which used to be more common years ago, but aren't now.

Chevron stations are more common than the 76 stations, but nowhere near as common as BP, Exxon, and to some degree Marathon which are more dominant in NC.

76 is definitely not common here in NC. As a matter of fact, I think all the ConocoPhillips stations left NC a time ago.

I believe Chevron and Texaco are the same company, and they have much more locations in Georgia than they do here. New Bern used to have Chevron, but they all switched to Shell. Texaco left a few years back; Chevron never really had a huge presence here.

In NC, you're most likely to see an Exxon, BP, Shell, or Speedway (if you're in the eastern part of the state). Marathon has a moderate-high coverage around here but many of their gas stations used to be Citgos.

I've noticed that Chevron tends to be part of Mom and Pop auto mechanic operations, at least in central NC.
