Hi everyone!

We are deciding if we should move to North Carolina or South Carolina. We are from California but moved to Utah 3 years ago. Although Utah is a very beautiful state, the wages are low, living cost is high, and employers do not provide medical, 401k, sick days and other employee benefits that are important to survive. There a very few large employers that do provide some of these benefits.

Bottom line, N.C. employers...do they usually provide good employee benefits and if you come down with short term disability, such as surgery or treatment and need to be off work for 3mo or so, is there state disability or do you have to purchase your own disability insurance or what do most people to in this case?

The FMLA currently allows 12 weeks per 12 months but I am not sure about state laws (if any). I pay for disability insurance because it is so cheap, basically about $5 a month for my coverage.

There are no short term disability benefits provided for by the state of NC. There is worker's compensation if you are injured on the job. The FMLA would only ensure your job would be available, you would not be paid. Usually you use your unused vacation or sick leave days. Then there is Social Security Disability, but that is usually for a long term disability.

Employers vary on what they offer their employee as benefits. There is no law stating the employer has to provide any benefits, to my knowledge.

Dear Groove1:

The disability insurance you pay is that provided by your employer or did you get that through an independent insurance agent or insurance company?

It is provided by my employer, but I am sure it is similar to health insurance where there is another company that would handle it.
