Kinston? Clayton? Raleigh? New Bern? Good Schools?
Need help deciding where we should buy a house! Hubby will be working in Kinston and I will be working from home. We have a 15 months old and a 4 years old. Good Schools is our priority #1...New Bern looks great "on google" near the beach....but we really need to find a kid/family friendly neighborhood/town...any suggestions are appreciated! Thanks

Raleigh and Clayton are too far for a commute (especially Raleigh).
New Bern is probably better for kids than Kinston itself, if only for being near the beach. When your kid gets to be a teenager and going to house parties every weekend, won't be as far for them to drive But really, there seems to be more of a "renaissance" going on in New Bern than in Kinston IMO (my other half is from Kinston and I am there frequently).

The best school is in Kinston.....but it's private. Arendell Parrott Academy | Home
Goldsboro would be a more reasonable commute, with good schools east of town. (Eastern Wayne High and the middle/elementary schools that feed into it) 20-30 min commute.
Winterville is also about a 20-30 min commute. Very family oriented.
New Bern, IMO, would still be too far of a commute daily. But it may just feel that way to me b/c there is absolutely nothing between New Bern and Kinston. Especially since the best elementary schools will be on the far side of town away from Kinston. There are good schools there, though.
Whatever is going on in Kinston is the exact opposite of Renaissance. It's worst today than it was 10 years ago.

Lol, I've never heard of New Bern described as "near the beach"; it's like 45 minutes to Atlantic Beach easily, assuming Havelock traffic isn't too bad.
Anyway, the commute between Goldsboro/Kinston and New Bern/Kinston is about the same- half an hour of nothing punctuated by the occasional billboard. It sucks either way. It's about 20 minutes exactly from the Home Depot in Greenville to the NC11/Vernon Ave. intersection in Kinston, if you don't get stuck behind two truckers in each lane who decide to go 15 below the speed limit.

Wasn't talking about Goldsboro proper, but Elroy, Walnut Creek, and New Hope areas. Which have Goldsboro or LaGrange addresses. These put you closer to Kinston The preferred area of New Bern IMO, would be on the East 70 Corridor, Trent Woods, or going out to River Bend. These areas would put you farther away from Kinston. True, though, from city limit to city limit the time is about the same. New Bern does have great water access, and the rivers due to have sandy beaches, like Flanners Beach on the 70 east corridor. http://www.tripleblaze.com/2/2721/Ca...-Beach%29.html

Thank you all for the answers! I'm more and more attracted to New Bern than others but will have to take a trip to check it out soon
I have to drive between at least 3 hours to 9 hours to go to the beach...so 45 min drive to the beach is "near the beach" to me at least!

New Bern does have the best public schools, overall, out of your options. The area is very family orientated as well.

The drive to the beach from New Bern, even with the H### of Havelock is VERY EASY...It is kinda New Bern, Havelock, Newport, Morehead City, and then beach. It is a very fast 45 minutes.
The drive from New Bern to Kinston is 70MPH on great road but there is NOTHING...B O R I N G.
New Bern has some very good schools, one of the best middle schools in the STATE is in Havelock, but is open enrollment, but that would be a haul from dropping off kids to Kinston. However, a fair number from New Bern attend.
My teenage girls drive to beach or go to beach 3 - 4 days a week in summer. Getting there and back is a non-event.
