I posted last December about hearing coyotes in the woods behind the old Circuit City in Apex. I was leaving the store at closing time and they were yipping and howling. Well on Memorial Day, at high noon, my wife and I were on the way out to the Haw River to do some hiking and a coyote ran across highway 64 a couple of hundred yards in front of us! So, it's official, I have actually seen one in Apex.
It crossed the highway between the Beaver Creek shopping center and Kelly Road. I consider myself blessed to have seen one! Pretty cool indeed...

We live in Louisburg, NC. That's in Franklin County for those of you who may not know that.

Yesterday, at 5 a.m. we spotted two coyotes running down a couple of deer. They heard us and stopped just beyond our backyard fence. The two of them stood right there and stared back at me before taking off across my neighbor's cow pasture. The deer got away.

Now I know for sure what got my three pet turkey hens and all their newly hatched chicks.

This is the first time we've seen coyotes in our vicinity.

I saw an interesting ad on craigslist the other day. Some guy wanting to hunt coyote on someone's land if they have problems with them! Said he wouldn't charge anything-he just wants to kill them.

I've seen more bears than coyotes since I've lived in NC. 19 yrs now. Saw way more coyotes in TX where I grew up. I figured there were none here. at least not to a level that caused a problem.

Default Cayote spotted

Last year i spotted a red fox in calhowee, Sylva, up tilley creek rd., running across the rd.Now,just this moring a cayote was near the chickens in the field near the house. I didn't see any others around, just the one. Does anyone know if one is allowed to take care of the problem now or does one have to wait for hunting season or something?

I don't think coyotes are endangered and if they are on your property you can dispose of them however you wish.

In NC on private land, the season is always open, never closed. You can shoot them with anything. However for trapping there is a designated season.

Good to know. There have been coyotes in our yard and we live in coastal Brunswick County 4 miles from the ocean (but on the other side of HWy 17). We see bears, coyotes, and HUGE foxes besides plenty of deer, opossums and all the stuff you'd expect...I would not have expected so many coyotes. I would be afraid to have small pets outside and it does not help matters that my next door neighbor keeps chickens, roosters, and ducks penned up- it attracts the coyotes, making them come across our land more.

What scares me is seeing them walk by slowly in the day- makes me worry about rabies. We saw the biggest fox I have ever seen just out walking around..I would have been afraid to shoot him and dispose of him for that reason. Would have called AC but he would have been gone by the time they responded (unless I guess he was rabid and came back)

I live in rural Cumberland County, bordering Sampson County. People are now buying donkeys to put in their cow pastures to scare off the coyotes.

Default Yikes!

I have one...last night in Union County, NC I was out at the horse barn around 9:30. We're in the country, a mile from highway 74. An ambulance went by, it was a full moon and I could tell where every coyote out there was! They howled and howled and they were not far. Frightening realization!
