Yea.. they go in, cut stuff out, close stuff up.. whatever and sew em back up.. and you pay extra to make sure they aren't in pain, which those meds are marked up insane. I think vets are another story. I paid $12 for a de-worm pill for my little kitty.. and $18 to have them test her stool, which they discovered they didn't need to because it was tapeworm. Had they asked me one simple question I could have avoided that. Granted that's not much $$ but still.

Thank you Sunny for posting the list, I didn't realize there were soooo many
shelters and rescue agencies available in NC......any animal is worth saving
what we need is responsible pet owners that when they take an animal its a total committment, not something that you play with a couple of months and then throw over a fence and hope that they survive. Thank you again that was a great post.

You will see dogs in "cells" hundreds of feet away from the house.

The worst is that the GAS CHAMBER is still used in many county pounds through the state.

There was just a huge meeting at the AG Dept about the gas chambers, and it doesn't look like they will be getting rid of them soon.

It really is tough if your an animal lover like me.

The hunters will "dump" beagles, hounds at the gassing pounds if the don't hunt.

It's really really backward here.
NCtolong,
It is hard to be an animal lover ANYWHERE.
I probably treat my dog better than most people treat their families; however, I consider my dog a family member.
I don't think NC is any different from any other place when it comes to how animals are treated.
Putting down animals is not a pretty site regardless of how it is done.
I have had to hold dogs in my arms while they were injected with so called humane drugs. It hurts real bad.
People who treat an animal badly will never change.
Because a person houses his dog in a pen or dog house does not make him uncaring or cruel.
My dog and all of my animals eat with us sleep with us and LIVE WITH US. Some folks think we are crazy. It's just how we are.
The people of NC and other states are not animal abusers and uncaring.
You gotta worry about the Michael Vicks of this country.

Just a terrific well worked on list, Sunny. Great job! Now, all those who want to make a change, simply go for it. Plenty of contact information now. I'm sure many, if not all, have loads of information to help anyone wanting to help others caring for animals to get involved.

Huh? Confused! Same with the OP. It's easy to be an animal lover. It's hard to love owners who mistreat their animals, aka pets.

I second that. NC is not exclusive nor should be singled out, really. Not that the OP really meant for NC to be the only state with issues. Animal cruelty is a national... correction... world issue.

That's usually the case with animal lovers. And I respect that. I've been a dog lover for ages, but even our cats have distinct personalities that make them family members. I swear, they truly sense the different emotions we go through and respond differently depending on what is exuded.

Nope. That's a fact. Though putting down animals in the most painless of means, ideally through injection (at least for now until they come up with something better), is what humans must strive for since domesticated animals were domesticated in the first place for our personal human desires. We owe animals that dignity and respect.

I have not yet personally experienced a painful euthanasia by injection, but I would never rule it out. I'm sure there must be better methods that have not yet even been created yet. However, I'm sure there are many different types of drugs that are used and some, I'm sure, are still painful. And, if they are, they must be banned.

Seems like it. Though, the word never is strong. I'm sure some ignorant humans can change with the proper amount of education and empathy, if not sympathy.

Depends on the size of the dog and the size of the pen and for how long they are kept in that pen.

That sounds terrific. For you, of course. Our cats hang out with us during gestation (probably because they sense we are rather soothed and calm) and, fortunately, are not begging at the dinner table. Though we care not for our cats, or dogs, to sleep with us on the bed. It's really the hair thang. Bleck!

Huh? Not all, of course, but certainly some if not many. That's just humans for you.

Well, you gotta worry about the type of people that do things that Michael Vicks is being accused of partaking. Sorry, even though the media provided evidence makes it clear that there is guilt, I'm an avid "Guilty until proven Innocent" kind of guy (that's just me, but that stance certainly served me and others well during the Duke LaCrosse case ).

Sunny, thanks for taking the time to create this list. I am going to copy it in case I hear of someone that needs to find a home for a pet. I belong to a freecycle site and it is unbelievable the number of posts by people that post asking someone to adopt their pet because they are PCS'ing. Sometimes they will add, that if they don't find a home by such and such date, the animal is going to the pound. I am going to look into the situation at the local SPCA. Thanks again!

Someone from New Jersey was posting about how North Carolina was "really really backwards", while posting minimal facts to back it up - just a bunch of rag-tag opinions about what he/she thinks, with insults scattered here and there.

I'm going to use the word Yankee when I think it is appropriate. It's a shame if you don't like it, but as it was not directed to you, I'm not inclined to apologize.

If, somehow, you interpret this to be some blanket dislike of all Yankees, then that's a shame as well. Frankly, I feel you are overreacting and not interpreting the statement in the manner that it was intended - but you know what they say: when all you have is a hammer, everything looks like a nail.

Well if you don't believe me and your an animal lover, then don't say you weren't "warned"

Unless you have a heart of stone, eventually you will start to get depressed and sad when you see these animals chained, CAGED, and then gassed to death in gas chambers in NC.

Someone asked what the difference is of keeping a dog outside or in an apartment?

That is such a stupid question, but I will respond.

Well, for one, NC is an extremely hot and humid state.

If kept in an apartment, at least these dogs are cool and comfy and don't risk dying from the heat.

I don't think there are any NORTHERN states that utilize the gas chamber.

How should an animal be put down? With a quick and painless shot while being loved and held by a vet.

Imagine if you were put in a hot, smelly dark box. FIrst off, you would be scared. Then the smell and feel of gas coming on you would scare the heck out of you.

Then the gas burns the animals eyes, etc.. I could go on and on.

This is the realilty here. Don't forget the dogfighting also.

The only reality here is that your just trying to be alarmist with no facts to back your case. Lethal Injections is method of choice in 21st century. Gas has not been used in decades. The news article backs me up with THE FACT.

THE FACT that there is all these animal rescues listed above and below prove that their is effort to reduce the amount of pets being put to sleep. I can list more since there least one in about every 100 counties.

THE FACT there is a program to offer affordable spay and neuter proves NORTH CAROLINA LOVES ANIMALS AND PETS.
