My husband has lived in mn all his life .we moved to nd for 6 months for a job he got laid off . He had to collect unemployment from nd . Well wer moved back to mn and he is still collecting unemployment from nd and it going to run out because they do not get extentions because they have a low rate. So he got screwed now living back in mn where you can not find a job .you would think that he could get unemployment from mn. What does anyt body think out there.

You can only collect unemployment from the state where you have wages in the base period. If he doesn't have MN wages in his base period, he can't file a MN claim.

But let me ask you...If you were already living in ND where the unemployment rate is substantially lower than the rest of the country, why didn't you stay there and he could look for work there? Why move back to an area where it's harder to get work?

I do agree, it's unfortunate that he didn't qualify for extensions. However, there's a good reason...their unemployment rate is low.

from my understanding...at least in NY anyway, is that if you willingly quit your job you do not qualify for unemployment. You can only qualify if you are "let go" or laid off.

no..b/c your employer isn't forcing you to leave. That's the thing, you have decided that on your own. As a reiteration, you CANNOT qualify for any unemployment in NY if you quit your job on your own accord.

I know this message is more than two years old, but for the benefit of others I want to say that YOU have paid NOTHING into the system. Period.

Employees DO NOT contribute to the unemployment insurance fund. EMPLOYERS do. Time and time and time again I hear people exclaiming that they "paid into the system, they are owed". It does NOT work that way. Employers pay into the unemployment insurance fund based on the number of employees they have and whether they've had any previous claims against the fund, etc.

I actually had to call ny unemployment benefits to ask. Not so much about getting unemployment...because I already do through my job's layoffs. They did confirm that you can transfer EXISTING benefits to another state. The amounts do not change either. I just have to notify them when I've moved. I believe I still have to contact NC's unemployment offices but my benefits will still come from NY. I realize that your question was slightly different though.
