I have been wondering this too. My husband may get a new job in NC, so I was wondering if that would qualify me for unemployment benefits.

unless you are asking a different type of question, I don't think you can collect unemployment by willfully leaving a job to relocate.
Unemployment Benefits
Eligibility
In order to receive unemployment compensation, workers must meet the requirements for wages earned or time worked during an established (one year) period of time. In addition, workers must be determined to be unemployed through no fault of their own.

And we wonder why NY is in such financial straits.....do you think it would be at all feasible for a state to continue paying you after you have left said state, I'm assuming voluntarily? That would be utter fiscal madness on the part of any state!!!!!

No. YOU have to have a job and pay into the system before YOU are eligible for benefits. I'm not trying to be nasty but I can't belive that someone would even ask such a question. Unemployment is a temporary insurance program that your employer pays into. It isn't some free pot of gold.

Very good question!!!
Yes as a matter of fact you can collect UE insurance if you can prove leaving your present job and moving was due to some sort of hardship etc. My husband is disabled and basicaly it is a medical reason.
Look into it, it can't hurt.

Having worked for Unemployment in the past, the law is you cannot collect if you have to quit your job to relocate. If you voluntarily resign you do not have a case to collect benefits. Good Luck!

Well... once you are qualified & ar egetting benefits (that you paid into the system to get, while you were working) NY will send you your check, no matter what state you are in.
But, as the PP's stated, you will not get benefits if you left your job voluntarily.

Thanks Everybody..
I am not looking for a " Pot of Gold" LOL...I have paid into the system for 25 years ....The reason I posted the question is someone had told me if forced to leave your job because a spouse had been relocated and you must go NY will pay you..That was a long time ago..One never knows what you are entitled to unless you ask...

Not trying to be nasty, huh? Sure sounds like it to me!!! Thought these boards were supposed to be helpful and not attack anyone.
As with the OP, I may have to leave my current job due to a new job offer for my DH. I was just wondering if this would qualify me for UE since I need to move several states away, and it may take me a little while to find a new job.
DO NOT insult my intelligence or that of anyone else on here by inferring we are looking for a free pot of gold. I work hard for the money I earn and do not appreciate you assuming that we are looking for any freebies.
To the OP- thank you for the question. I DO think it is a relevant discussion.
