You don't want "very socialist" while you live off of unemployment checks from the government?

Yeah the pay continues, but I think it's adjusted to the NC cost of living.

Yea its funny, but I don't like living like this. I had no damn choice, I want to buy something I can afford while I still have the money. Can't afford anything where I am. Really I think any state with a high unemployment is under the influence of socialism which is basicly the whole east coast.

I was a travel consultant. I'll probably look into other fields when I find work again.

I understand about wanting to buy rather than renting, but I want to caution you in the fact that banks are not going to look upon your employment situation favorably when you approach them about a loan. Of course, if you are able to purchase a property with all cash that won't be a stumbling block for you to purchase something. If that's the case, I'll tell you that there are some good deals to be had in McDowell County and the taxes in this county are lower than what you'll find in the counties to the east and west of us. The last two transactions that I closed were all cash deals and the Buyers were able to get better prices than what the Seller was asking because of this.

I also I've been hearing that there are some companies that will be coming to McDowell in the near future and be bringing jobs to the area... There is a Super Walmart shopping center currently being built on Sugar Hill Road. The McDowell News reported last week that there are plans on a Tractor Supply store going into one of the buildings in the city that has been sitting vacant for years. Also, the County has voted to offer a parcel of land to a yet unnamed industry that will bring $30 million to the county and 100 plus jobs. There are also two apartment complexes planned to be built in Marion.

No, none of these will provide work to you as a travel consultant, but they are all examples of how the economy appears to be strengthening in the county. It's giving all of us that live here hope for the area. Business breeds business...

Exploiting the Carolinas for cheap purchase price?

If buying a house in a location cheaper than where you currently live, you can buy dirt cheap throughout the Midwest - there are some killer deals going on in MI right now for houses + lots of land at a fraction of what you can find in the NC metro areas. And some of the Midwest states are turning very anti-socialism ..

And what percentage of NC transplants would still have come here if it hadn't been cheaper than where they were living.

The OP wants better weather and doesn't want to live in a "metro" area.

What do you classify as cheap land?

I would guess there is at least a small percentage. My COL went up when I came here, but I also didn't actively come here for a lower COL.

I classify "cheap" based on comparable prices to purchase similar properties within the same proximity to their respective job/metro area. A house with 20 acres is a lot more expensive here than a similar house on 20 acres in places like MI.

So where in fact is the line drawn for "socialism" or is it a moving target based on your immediate situation? It would appear that, when it comes to your needs, it's tolerable. I'd hope that you would be as tolerant when someone else needs it sometime in the future when you don't.
Additionally, we must all remember that our roads, our schools, our police and fire departments, our sewer systems, our parks, etc. are all SOCIALLY provided. Or, in our narrow definition of socialism, do these things not count?
It would seem to me that most Americans who are against "socialism" draw that line just to the outside of the things that they WANT to pay for and enjoy. Essentially, if I don't use, I don't want to pay for it.
There isn't any place in NC that's not socialist as long as you find roads, sewers, police and fire protection. That said, there are places that have more social programs such as Chapel Hill's free bus system or publicly funded arts programs in cities across the state.

LOL- that answer makes you sound like a politician.

I think there would be more than 30% of transplants to NC who wouldn't have come if the COL hadn't been lower than from where they originated.

So how much per acre are you talkng about for MI? Is that where you moved from?
And when you say here, where do you mean- 20 miles of Charlotte, more/less?, whole of NC?
