VA and SC have that exploratory colonial feel which NC doesn't. Richmond and Charleston seem more similar than any two cities between VA and NC.
Just curious what you mean by "exploratory colonial feel". If it's colonial history you want, NC has plenty of that. Old Salem, Bath, Edenton, Manteo/Ft Raleigh, Beaufort, Tryon Palace, plantations, and more.

Captain John Smith in the Chesapeake. There is the failed Roanoke colony in NC, so there is some there too but more in VA.
Culturally and economically North Carolina is closer to Virginia. South Carolina to me seems like a cross between Georgia and Alabama
SC and AL do have some similar characteristics like populations, GDPs, signature industries, distribution of metro areas, etc but no way is SC more like AL than NC. It's a cross between GA and NC--the only two states it directly borders.
