Smile College Life in North Carolina?

I am doing research on Grad schools and I thought I might want to look at North Carolina since I want to stay on the East coast. Which North Carolina schools might be best for an Anthropology major?

How is the cost of living for college students? Is it hard to find part-time jobs to work around a school schedule? How easy is it to get around in North Carolina? Would I need to travel far for basic needs such as groceries? What is the cost of food in North Carolina?

It depends on your specific interests. Duke has a cultural anthro program; UNC has a larger multi-field anthro program, including medical anthropology and archaeology.

I would suggest selecting your program based on your interests (and their intersection with faculty interests), the program quality, and the support given to graduate students, rather than simply on location. To speak specifically of living in Durham (Duke) or Chapel Hill (UNC), I will say that it is very possible in Chapel Hill or Carrboro to live on a graduate student stipend without a car and to have no trouble getting around between a bicycle and the fare free bus service. I've done the same in Durham, but it is not as easy.

To compare the cost of living to other states, I'd suggest looking at one of those region comparison calculators. You will probably find it is quite similar to GA/Atlanta if that is where you are now.

Hi, East Carolina University has a good anthropology program and if you are interested in Archaeology, they have a really exciting underwater archaeology program. ECU is near the coast in Greenville and is much cheaper than Duke or UNC Chapel Hill

What do you plan "to do with" your education? Do you have to take GRE or MAT first? Do you have funding possibilities? An academic advisor? Have you talked to him/her? Why not start there first, then worry about the other. You'll pay non-resident tuition outside of GA and it is waay more than undergrad. Good luck to you.
