Regardless of the city, I think the biggest problem is finding the combination of liberal/progressive with affordable. The most liberal places in NC are also among the most expensive. Even in more politically balanced cities, the more liberal areas of those cities are usually more expensive.
That all said, I think that Durham is going to offer you the most for your dollar and it puts you in a position to take advantage of nearby Raleigh and Chapel Hill.
