Lumberton, NC
Hey everyone!
I've been searching for threads about Lumberton, NC, and I haven't found any, so I'm starting one.
My family could be moving there, because I just heard today that my Dad would be assigned to that city. I've been there twice: the first time in some factory furniture store, and the second time, somewhere near the hospital.. Unfortunately, I could not really recall anything.
Now my Mom has instructed me to do a bit of internet research.. Is there anything to do there? Is the crime rate really that high? Do you know any useful links for nice [and safe] apartments?
I would appreciate getting real opinions from people familiar with the place.
Thank you very much!

Well, the good thing is, if you like the beach you can get there real easily in less than 2 hours from Lumberton. Don't want to discourage you, but that area of the state is higher in unemployment and drop out rates. I would say it doesn't have as much going for it as other parts of the state. Hopefully someone who actually lives there will write to you here so they can give you first hand info. Everything is relative though, so where you would be moving from could be a lot worse than this.

Lumberton is a stagnant city. Its right off the interstate of I-95. Not a bad drive to the beach, but I suspect you need more than a quick drive to the beach. Once you get out of Lumberton its surrounded on all sides by tobacco and cotton fields. I like Lumberton personally, its an old Southern city, just doesnt have much going for it.

I agree that Lumberton doesn't really have a lot going on. I've only been there a couple times, so I'm far from an expert on the city. Just from what I saw, it doesn't seem to be an interesting place to live. It is less unattractive than Fayetteville though, so that's good. lol And, as has been said, it's fairly close to the beach. For me, that would be a definite plus.
Hopefully someone who knows more about Lumberton will come in here soon and be better able to help you.
All the best.

I agree. I lived in Lumberton for 7 years. The best area was on the north end of town around Lumberton High School.

Yes, my folks have finally visited Lumberton a few days ago, and yup, they said that the best area was the Fayetteville Rd/St vicinity. Our biggest concern as a family is good housing, and it looks like there's not much for us over there. I guess my Dad would just have to commute 40 mins to his work. I'm sure we'll find a way..
Thank you very much!

Hi,
Can any one tell:
1. How safe is lumberton?
2. Are appartment/house available for rent easily?
3. What about education for kids?
Is it better to stay in Fyetteville or lumberton if you have job in Lumberton?
Thanks in advance

The Tanglewood area is a decent area. Moderator cut: removed I have lived in Lumberton off and on for the last two years. Felt perfectly safe staying by myself.
Lumberton has OUt Back,Ryans,Cracker Barrel,Lowes, Sams,Walmart, etc. I am very comfortable when I am there.
Good luck.

I've lived in Robeson County for a couple of years. The area we lived in, there's no way my daughter was going to go to the public schools. We sent her to Flora McDonald Academy in Red Springs. I'm sure some of the public schools within Lumberton HAVE to be decent.
I went back to Lumberton a couple of months for the 1st time in a couple of years and I couldn't believe how much the town was GROWING despite the unemployment problems in Robeson County.
Robeson, at one time, had several textile plants in the county. And then, of course, each one closed down and jobs were sent overseas. And the employees who worked there were largely, undereducated people, and they've had a hard time bouncing back.

I'd live between Lumberton and Fayetteville like in the Grey's Creek school district. It is a quick drive down 95 to Lumberton.
