The way you talk you would think that no southerner would move up north because we're all racist against you. Not sure why you'd want to move into a situation like that.
Actually, my husband and I would move back to Pittsburgh in a heartbeat. We LOVED it there. But it's too far from family and no job there, LOL. If we win the lottery tho....we may have a second home there. Liz

Exactly.

As a NC native, I have to say yes, the state has changed considerably over the last few years. People from all over are moving in and yes, it is making traffic worse and housing more expensive. However, this is NOT just because "those damn yankees" are moving in. It's largely due to gross mismanagement of the funds the state takes in through taxes and failure to be forward thinking when it comes to traffic and transportation infrastructures. That is NOT the fault of the people moving into the area.

Yes, people moving into the area are going to be wistful about some of the things they left behind. I do the same thing where I'm living now. That doesn't mean I, or they, are trying to change a thing about the current living space.

This whole "well, try to fit in with the South's way of doing things and you might be accepted" is bunk. A poster made mention of how her child was polite in saying "Yes, Mrs. So and So" or "No, Mrs. So and So" and was called out simply because she wasn't using "ma'am". I'm sorry, but the child was being polite in the first place and shouldn't have been made to say anything different. That's one of the problems for people moving into the area. Even if they are being polite and accepting, they are met with resentment if they don't do it by the "Southern rulebook".

Also, whether Southerners want to admit it or not, there is still a LOT of prejudice and racism in NC. Racism isn't solely about hating a person for their skin color. It goes MUCH deeper than that. Stereotypes come about and are continued for a reason.

I had many reasons for leaving NC, but in a way, the final decision was made because I wanted to get away from the unchanging, prejudiced, racist, "the war will never be over", hateful attitudes of many people in NC. Thankfully, that attitude seems to be becoming less prevalent in the younger people coming up, so maybe things will become more mellow for all people living in or moving to NC in years to come.'

To the original poster, in answer to your question "what exactly do the Yankees do to annoy the natives so much", sadly, I think it can be summed up into "simply breathing" when it comes to a lot of the older natives of NC. Sorry. It really shouldn't be that way.

Yes, even in the winters cause they weren't as hard as MI winters. And Pittsburgh wasn't FLAT like SE MI. Granted, where I am now is flat but I can accept it cause we are next to the ocean. Liz

Maybe I should be asking you what you are doing here if southerners are so bad.

Maybe you should look back on my posts to see that I'm leaving this state, one of the myriad of reasons being what's discussed in this thread.

I totally agree with you on everything you said. The manners thing really gets me though. My children are very polite and have been raised to have good manners no matter what the situation. My oldest was at a house where the family is native to NC. She was reprimanded when she didn't say yes,ma'am but instead said yes, please. That is just stupid. That house also has two of the most unruly girls I have ever met whether here or any other state(and I have been to plenty of them). So because those girls that totally talk trashy except when they say yes ma'am are accepted and my child who is totally respectful isn't,because she said yes please instead of yes ma'am that's a problem.

My definition of destroying some ones home, Increased traffic, decreased open spaces, overcrowded schools, higher taxes, higher crime, increased cost of housing rates, air quality and pollution increase, water shortages, Increase in price of every thing basically. Maybe I should have been more politicaly correct and said transplants are changing peoples homes in NC in a negative direction.
The other part, been there done that Cary city council does what it wants, lobbists greez there backsides and they build and greed wins.
Not complaining just shooting it straight,Im from here and dont have to justify a choice to move here and then get defensive when they ask a question and get the anwser. Peace my brother, I dont care where you come from.
