We're looking for a small town to retire to with lakes and good fishing(especially bass). Also mild climate, low/medium humidity, little or no snow, reasonable housing prices and low cost of living. Mt. Airy is one town we're looking into. What are some other good choices? Thanks.

There are several areas that would suit you , but your best bet , IMO , would be here www.montgomerycounty.com. It is in a national forest , and the lakes come alive during spring and summer. I went in April , and left with a 5 pound LMB , I was shocked!! There are smallmouth in a river there as well , but I haven't been since 2007. I believe they average 1.5 to 2 pounds , but there may be larger ones there. Also , look into www.nccentralpark.com , for detailed info. There are really too many places to name , visit the Forest Service webpage , and click on N.Carolina , in case the above links dont work. Cost of living is usually low in these areas , unless you live directly on a watercourse. Good luck!!

I used to live in Rapid City, SD. It's a wonderful town about 80.000 people nestled right before the Black Hills. Housing costs are low. I had bought a 920sq/ft home for 50,000 years ago and believe there still may be deals like that.
I wanted to post because you had mentioned bass fishing. Oh man would you be in luck! there are some great lakes about 15min out of town that do not receive much bass fishing pressure. (trout fishing is more popular there) They're never overcrowded and during the work week, you might be the only people on those lakes!
When I retire..I'm moving back to Rapid City, SD
Hope this is some helpful information

Oh, I did forget to mention the weather. Yes there will be snow storms in the winter but there is relatively low humidity and the frequent afternoon thunderstorms are the best I have ever seen! They don't last long but the show the lightning and thunder puts on is unforgettable!

Thanks, but I don't know why you posted this in the NC forum. Anyway, Rapid City is too cold and too much snow.
