Default Info. about Whiteville?

Hello,

I've been looking at houses in SC but I just found a house online I really like in Whiteville, NC. Can anyone tell me what that area is like? I see it's not far from Lake Waccamaw, does that cause a lot of flooding? Thanks

Where are you moving from? What are your expectations for your new community?

Those questions will determine a lot about if you like the area. I have a lot of family from that area and spent some time there when I was younger. If you are used to rural living, it's not bad. If you want anything remotely like a city, it's not for you. Not sure why you are looking to move, but if you don't have a job lined up in that area first I would advise against moving there to try to find one. There is little industry in the area and not much in the surrounding towns...

I'm moving from NJ (big shock) and I live near the beach. We want someplace within and hour or so of the beach and Myrtle Beach airport. We want a large lot under $200,000. We prefer rural or beach area, schools are not an issue. Job, not really an issue.

What I'm really trying to find out about Whiteville is: When I go grocery shopping, do I have to drive an hour? Are there chain stores there such as Walmart, Costco etc...If I want to order dinner delivered is that even possible or is it that rural there's nothing for miles? Thanks

Whiteville is a nice little town. Lots of places to eat. No fine dining, just your small town places. Lots of food stores. They have a Super WalMart. If you want fine dining or large malls drive to Myrtle Beach (37 miles short cut) or Wilmington (40 miles to the east.) The Golf Heaven of Pinehurst is 60 miles or so away. If you are looking for a nice quite place with rivers and lakes, the beach less than an hour in three directions, Whiteville is a good place. Take a few days off and go to Whiteville, check into a motel and drive around. Talk to people (you will find them very friendly). My brother lived all over the world for the last 50 years and he just moved back there. Money Magazine suggest that for retirement you find a resort town that you like, drive 40 -50 miles from the resort town and purchase a house. THAT'S WHITEVILLE! Good Luck. Joe

I 2nd what opstand said. My parent's are origianlly from that area (Tabor City) and my grandparents are still in the area. I'm not saying it's bad, just be careful on what you want in an area. It's got the stores, eating places you would want. Does get really hot/humid in the summers with LOTS of gnats/flies. Can be prone to hurricanes and tornados. Good luck!

Whiteville has probably the worst gas chamber in the state at present.
Columbus County pound uses an outdated gas chamber on the animals.

People have been fighting "city hall" about it. Nothing changes.

If you are looking for reasonably priced property close to the Myrtle Beach, SC area, try Tabor City, NC. Located on HWY. 701 just 30 minutes north of North Myrtle Beach, Tabor City is a small town that is close to many things. Visit the website Tabor City | Welcome for more information.
