The job that my husband is interviewing for has benefits (thank goodness), we haven't had health insurance in years. Up here in NH, they only have medicaid for children and disabled adults. We can't get it through my hubby's work and we applied to outright buy private insurance but DH is diabetic and they denied us due to PE condition.

So I'm just curious if NC has medicaid available to adults without severe disabilities. In the event that DH ever lost coverage through work for any reason, it'd be nice for him to be able to still see an endocrinologist and get his insulin prescription, etc.

Also, what about for kids? I don't think my hubby would be eligible for his benefits until 90 days after he starts, I'd like to be able to have some kind of coverage for my kids during that time.

They have a high risk pool, so that even if you are denied health insurance you can buy it in the state high risk pool.

If you don't qualify for medicaid, and have been denied insurance because of a pre-existing condition, NC has an insurance risk pool. Inclusive Health - Insuring Individuals with Medical Conditions

Also, if you have not had insurance for 6 months and have been denied because of pre-existing condition the ObamaCare bill also provides a risk pool administered either by the state or the federal government. In NC it is administered by the same inclusive health link above. For other states you can go to Home | HealthCare.gov to find out how to apply.

Those are individual policies only for the one with pre-existing conditions. If you or your children are not qualified for medicaid, then you can get online quotes from www.bcbsnc.com

I work in NC Medicaid (though not in Eligibility, which would know the answers to your questions) and there are some in the 21-64 age range, though of course very few.

Here is the web page for NC Medicaid.
