Default A must-listen for anyone interested in local public affairs

Anyone who's living anywhere in North Carolina, and has any interest in local (or national) civic issues, I think might be interested in listening to some of today's episode of the NPR program Fresh Air. It's not a perfect report, and there are a few aspects of the way it portrays the local situation that I might take issue with, but on the whole I think it's important and interesting, and raises issues worthy of thought and discussion:

Fresh Air from WHYY : NPR

By the way, for what it's worth, I am absolutely not related to the guy discussed in this story. When people hear my surname now, they often ask me if I'm part of his family, and I certainly am not (at least that I know of).

Thx for sharing. Yes, Pope has been at work for quite some time playing puppetmaster with our community and of course schools. He's a piece of work!

Thanks for posting. This is the associated article in the New Yorker:

I found Jim Goodmon's comments really interesting.

Yes, me too. But the key thing now is for people like you and me to do something about it. Start by getting out and voting on Tuesday, and encouraging like-minded people we know to do the same. And continue to be vigilant, and look for opportunities to speak out against the kinds of tactics being practiced by people like those described in these articles.

Democracy is only as good as the people we sell our votes to.
When we sell our votes to the "wrong" people, we need to be restrained.
