Consumer Reports did nationwide rankings of health-insurance plans from the National Committee for Quality Assurance.

They report on the top 218.
It took until #119 (83/100) to find a HMO available in NC...
and then still just two more (#165 and #209)

Follow the link and poke around inside these for more detail.
PPO's and Medicare rankings are available too.

You don't even want to know what I have been through over the last 3.5 months with a certain large company in SC. I finally told them this morning to cancel my application and I am seriously thinking of reporting them to the SC Dept. of Insurance. I applied the end of July and they STILL were screwing around with all the underwriting and basically told me it was going to take another 1-2 months. Actually told me the middle of September that they did accept me, and then I get a letter on Saturday saying...um, maybe not. Ended up having to keep COBRA so I would be assured to have coverage and my last elect date is tomorrow. Had I been past that I would have really, really been PO'ed.

Another joyful "benefit" of being unemployed in the Carolinas. This list does NOT surprise me at all. I must say that up in PA we were part of a plan that is in the top 20 and I can say that we were treated much, much better with them, including cost and benefits paid, than I have experienced with anyone down here in 3 years. Good think I love living here!!!
