Default Transplants from So.Cal or Hawaii? What's it like in 'the South'?

I'm curious to hear what it's like living in 'the south' from people who are from Southern California and also anyone that has moved there from Hawaii (but not for military reasons).

My husband and I are thinking of relocating to somewhere in NC. We are originally from San Diego, but we've been living in Hawaii for the past 12 years. Both California and Hawaii are pretty liberal, what's it like in NC? How is it different from either of these places both culturally and socially? How are the lifestyles and attitudes of people different? Other things I'm curious about, is it clear and sunny or rainy most of the time. Are there long periods where it's gloomy and rainy (thinking like Seattle area...can't handle that). I hear it's humid a lot, how is that compared to Hawaii? Also, mosquitos compared to Hawaii? If we're not big Sunday morning church goers would we be frowned upon?

I'm sure a lot of it has to do with where in NC you live. From what we know so far (never been there yet), we like the Lake Norman area (we'd like to have a house on a lake), or maybe Ashville area. Raliegh seems like it could be a choice too, but I don't think we could find a house on a lake in that area. Looking for a family oriented community/town, not TOO small but close to a bigger area like Raliegh or Charlotte for example.

Thanks and Aloha!

The coast of NC could compare to Santa Maria, the mountians could compare to Carmel with no beach. The Smoky Mountians to lake Tahoo,Charlotte could compare to El Segundo and Raleigh to San Deigo.
