I moved to Hickory from FL a year and 3 mos ago, but last year I never remember seeing these whatever they are, look like giant grasshopper/mole cricket.Never saw them in FL before. I am curious -- They attach their legs on our deck and die or just leave there shell (molt) and they are so gross. What are they? Are they dying or they go somewhere else? Are they the ones making all the racket in the trees all day long? I heard stories about locust and they eat vegetation. I am thinking they are locust, but they do not look green-they are brown. I watch the news and they never say anything about them. I tried looking on internet w/o luck. Can someone tell me what they are and if they are here every year or only during droughts?? Are they bad? Thanks for any feedback.

Probably a cicada shell. They are the ones making all the noise.
Yes, it sounds like you're talkingabout the beautiful cicada.
People actually eat them. Here's a great looking example of cicada soup.
