I'm from Charlotte, NC. I have been several places in North Carolina.

Any suggestions for short (2-3 days) or long (3 days to a week) vacation places around North Carolina during December, i.e from now till end of the month.

I want to do it in a budget so looking places around where I can drive. No flights.

I really enjoy the coast during the wintertime. Often the days are nice enough that walking on the beach can be quite pleasant with just a light jacket, especially on the southern beaches. The oysters are in season, there are no crowds, and rates are dirt cheap.

Of course, the mountains are great too if you're into winter sports.

It's not NC, and it's a real touristy place, but this time of year you can get a free trip to Myrtle Beach pretty easy if you're willing to listen to someone try to sell you a timeshare. Even paying for places should be pretty cheap right now in the off-season.

Otherwise, in NC, I'd suggest Bogue Banks/Crystal Coast area. A few days there would allow to explore the Museums, Lighthouse, Aquarium, anf other things at the beach, plus shoot over to New Bern for the Christmas stuff at Tryon Palace.

If you are into golf check out the Pineneedles-Mid-pines web site they are having some specials till Feburary. Southern Pines nice place to visit. The Mid-Pines hotel is very old and has a great feeling to it.
