Voters in at least 23 counties will be asked this fall to approve hikes in either sales taxes or real estate taxes to help build new schools and fund other local projects, the North Carolina Association of County Commissioners said Friday.

County commissioners, who said they needed more revenue sources, were given the authority to seek the tax increases under a bill approved by the state Legislature this year. But more than three-quarters of the state's 100 counties decided not to pursue the tax increases this year.

As of Aug. 30, 11 counties (Brunswick, Chatham, Gates, Henderson, Hoke, Macon, Moore, Pender, Polk, Swain and Union) had decided to put the 0.4 percent land transfer tax option on the November ballot. Nine counties (Columbus, Greene, Hertford, Lenoir, Martin, Pitt, Robeson, Sampson and Surry) were pursuing the sales tax option, and three counties (Davie, Harnett and Johnston) had decided to put both options in front of voters. In addition, four counties (Caswell, Duplin, Onslow and Pamlico) have already announced plans to pursue one of the options in next May’s primary election.

Is primary going to be held in may this year? It keeps getting moved around that I never know anymore.

Also when is the deadline for newcomers or non register voters to register to vote for this year?

There appears to be alot of tax issues facing this November elections.

Current law places the primary on May 6, 2008. Senate Bill 168 would move the primary to the first Tuesday in February (2/5 in 2008). The bill is currently in committee.

The deadline to register to vote is 25 days before the day of the election.
