Bills signed into law or awaiting action by Gov. Mike Easley will ban smoking inside adult care and nursing homes and all state government buildings.
University of North Carolina leaders can now prohibit smoking in more campus buildings and 100-feet buffer zones around them. Public schools also were told to adopt stricter no-smoking policies that also apply to off-campus events.

That was something I hadn't thought about before moving to NC last year. It was quite unpleasant walking into restaurants and smelling the smoke after years of it being banned in CT. There haven't been many restaurants though where it's been a big issue, it seems to be pretty well segregated in most places, or it could be the fact that we rarely go out to eat on weekends, and when we do it's usually off hours, "early bird" times, bec of the kids.
