Well, just thinking about the landmasses... of course NC is bigger and also includes interesting geographical features like the tallest mountains on the east coast as well as the outer banks.
SC has a small but nice slice of the mountains and some really nice beaches. I definitely think NC won out on having a better area of the mountains but it is a harder call about the coastal area.

Columbia is dark blue and Charleston is light blue. In actuality, if we could chop off the Upstate of South Carolina we would be a purple state.

North Carolina-A valley of humility between two mountains of conceit. This was a statement made in a political science book I found in the library. North and South Carolina are both good states but they have different personalities.
I think North Carolina is the unsung hero. Our motto of "to be rather than to seem" says a lot. If you come to North Carolina, you better be ready to take care of yourself because taking handouts and living off your neighbor are frowned on here. I would think the same thing is true in South Carolina too. I have noticed North Carolina laws keep the bigger businessman from taking advantage of its people than South Carolina. I have seen things going on in businesses in South Carolina and Florida that would have been closed down in our state.

IMO (and I'm probably in the minority on this thread) there's very little difference between NC and SC by today's standards. NC has been slightly more influenced by transplants. Still though, both states are really the same when it comes to culture and core beliefs.

I think Charlotte is pretty similar to SC, but the Triangle is quite different.

I'll give SC credit for Greenville too, but that's about it

I am a NC native and have lived all over the USA and think there are differences.
NC mountains cannot be beat; SC coast tops NC; Eastern NC is pretty much a void, with the exception of Wilmington; Charlotte is the Queen City, however you can live in SC with much lower taxes and enjoy it; RTP has it over Columbia, SC for jobs and universities; SC has lower income and property taxes, cheaper gasoline, cheaper electricity, and a lower cost of living; SC has better college football and NC has better college basketball and the BBQ is far better in NC than SC.

Surfing in SC blows goats. Another point in the Old North State's favor.

I'm no sure about that. It really depends on what you are looking for at the coast. SC beaches are definitely more touristy than NC beaches. I grew up on the NC Coast and people from NC coast got to the SC Coast for vacation. Even now, though both me and my wife take multiple vacations a year up and down the east coast (in fact my wife is taking a trip to DC with her girlfriends this weekend), Myrtle Beach is the only spot we visit two to three times a year. That said, it's been years since we actually set foot on the beach in Myrtle Beach. I'd say NC has better beaches, but SC has better beach towns (Charleston, Myrtle beach, and Hilton Head). Even then, I think NCs are better to live in , while SCs are better to visit. Also, i wouldn't say Eastern NC is a void, though I'd agree with that statement 20 years ago. Carteret/Craven county is by no means a metropolis, but it's not exactly the middle of nowhere either. Dare county hasalso has a lot going for it, even out of the tourist season. Even Onslow county and Jacksonville is not the same town it was in the 90s and prior. Greenville/Pitt County is a beacon in Eastern NC ans little Washington has it's charm. Outside of these areas I do agree with your statements. NE NC especially, minus Dare County.
