So I am in a tricky situation and have been searching all over the web to try and find answers, but it seems that everyone's situation is just a little bit different (and easier to handle) so I haven't been able to get a clear answer. Hopefully someone here can help...

My car broke down and my dad is letting me use his old car. He didn't drive it last year, so the registration and inspection have both expired. He'd done some moving around in the meantime, so he can't locate the title paperwork or the expired registration. I know I need to get the car inspected and then get it re-registered/renewed at the DMV, in that order. But I can't get it inspected without a copy of the registration (which I don't have), and I can't get a copy of the registration (because it's expired) and I can't get a new registration until I have had it inspected?!? Does anybody know how to navigate around this? Is there a way to get my car inspected without any form of registration? Or is there some way to get tags/current registration without having had my car inspected?

I feel like I'm in one of those scenarios where you need step 2 before step 1, but you can't get step 2 until you complete step 1. Anyone able to shed any light on the situation? All help is appreciated!!!

Sure. Back up three steps and have DAD deal with the MVA...
to get a duplicate title that he can then sign over to you...
so that YOU can then get the title in YOUR name and register
(and inspect, insure, etc to makeit your own).

When you find yourself in a hole the first step is to stop digging.

Inspections now follow the VIN on the car/truck. You should be able to take it to an inspection station and have it inspected. That worked for me when I didn't have current registration. Also, you can get a 10 day registration for 5 dollars. Your dad would have to do that I would think. That would give you 10 days to get it done.

Why not have the dealer inspect the car when you take it in for the recall?

I believe inspections in NC are valid for 90 days. After that and you will have to have another one done.

Would the issue causing the recall impact the car passing inspection? If it's the ignition thing, it won't impact the inspection. Just get the car inspected. If it passes you can renew your tag. If your tag expired July 15 and you don't renew it, you're in danger of being pulled over and ticketed. I don't know what the insurance ramifications are for that.
