My husband is taking the NC driving test tomorrow to get NC license (currently has one from England) but has been told it will take at least 10 days to receive the license card in mail. He urgently wants to buy a work van as he has been offered work starting in 2 days. We were told by DMV he needs an NC license to put a vehicle in to his name?? So would mean he can't start this job as can't buy a van, to transport large materials etc?!?!

If it is a private seller , he can purchase it , but cannot tag it in his name. Maybe your name can be used for licensing. Also , it will not take 10 days for the license to arrive. I was initially told the same , but it came in a week.

Did they give him a print out paper when he passed the test? Ever since NC started mailing licenses instead of printing them at the DMV, when I'd get mine renewed, change an address or changed my name, they would give me a paper that showed the new info, when I was at the DMV, etc and I was instructed that it would serve as my ID/licsense in a pinch.

I never thought that it would be good for anything unless I got pulled over in the interveining days. However this proved incorrect. When I got married and changed my name, the bank where my husband and I were opening a joint account needed an ID with my new name and wouldn't take my new SS card. So I went down to the DMV and did the stuff to get my name change and was given the print out, which the bank stated was an "official DMV document" and just as good (for those 10 or so days inbetween) as a license and let us go forward with the account.

The point of that story (sorry, long winded) is that if he's got that, it might work for him when buying a car as it appears it counts as official paperwork.

I also agree with the PP that it doesn't usually take 10 days. I've always had mine in hand in a week or less. I suppose they just say 10 days to cover their butts and make sure they aren't promising something they can't deliver.

thanks, he is at DMV right now waiting to do test, they said to change vehicle in to his name he needs the actual card sent in post, not the initial paper copy! I assume to buy a vehicle the owner would want to change the name and not wait (unless perhaps they were friends of ours)? I guess he will just have to wait, hopefully less time as you say, to get the work van and have to try and get as many materials delivered as possible!?
