To Ocean Mama
Rocky Mount is NOT near any ocean beach. It takes about 2 1/2 to 3 hours to drive east about 140 to 150 miles to the Outerbanks. If Great Wolf Lodge is going to Charlotte it will probably be a water/amusement park because I don't think there is any skiing there (too hot, all year). Skiing is in the northwest of the state.

To SaraLizzyBeth,
OceanMama said to take these posts with a grain of salt. You should include hers in that above all others. She thinks it's close to the ocean and wants to know if skiing is nearby. Please, please stay away from Cokey Road and Redgate Ave. It's one of the most dangerous areas in RM. It is in Edgecombe County and please read the contributors on this website about that. I don't advise RM at all. I have "no axe to grind" and I have lived there, therefore "first hand info". There are nicer cities in NC.

Actually Ninaspirit, below is my exact quote:
"I would love to hear feedback from families. We travel quite a bit. I loved that RM was so close to the ocean like we are here by Cape Cod!
We also like to take weekend jaunts. What's close either a drive or jumping on a flight from Raleigh(an hour or so)? I have heard that Great Wolf Lodge is building in Charlotte. My family is super excited about being within driving distance of that! Is skiing close? We are Yankees and need to get some skiing in at least once a year! "
A few hour drive or jumping on a flight from Raleigh is MY criteria of close. I am 2 hours from Cape Cod right now and to our family, that is a close and comfortable ride to the beach. It took us two hours to drive from our property in Rocky Mount to Virginia Beach. And our family has visited all of the operating Great Wolf Lodges. I would be happy to give you information about that company.
And I'm sure that your lovely state has an airport or two where we can jump on a flight to ski or take a few hour drive to a slope. I know the Appalachian mountain region extends well into North Carolina and there are probably many ski resorts there.
That's the feedback I was asking about. Info from thoughtful, traveling and kind families in the know. That's why I suggested that readers take responses with a grain of salt as your feedback was, well, I'm sure you can fill in the blanks.
I truly wish you all the blessings life is able to offer you.

Rocky Mount has the worst crime, worst unemployment, and one of the worst murder rates in the entire country. Rocky Mount is a complete hell hole, and the worst city in North Carolina.
Anyone want to disagree with that?

Hello Ocean Mama, I did not mean to hurt your feelings but I didn't want anyone mislead by your statements. A two hour drive or "jumping on a plane" is not what I would call being "close to" a beach area. That is really misleading to someone looking for honest, helpful information. I no longer live in North Carolina. I left there, leaving my brand new home behind which took about a year to sell.
I am so happy to be back home in the northeast. I still visit there and will this Christmas. I have family there who cannot relocate right now but would love to. I worry about them all the time because it's a dangerous place with a bad economy even in the best of times.

I would NOT disagree with that. Rocky Mount is my hometown. I lived there for the first 18 years of my life. (I am 31 now) It is very sad how horrible that city has become. The crime rates are extremely too high. My cousin just got murdered there last month.

We were born and raised in NYC and never knew anyone who was murdered. We lived in Rocky Mount for a little over a year and our neighbors grandfather was murdered in his convenience store and a man murdered his girlfriend a half mile down the road and that was on the outskirts of the city and that was TEN YEARS AGO. An elderly man was killed in full view of young kids just outside their schoolyard. It's only become worse since then.
