Rocky Mount is a nice city!!!!!!
After several months of interviewing and sifting thru many job offers, my husband and I will be moving to Rocky Mount. I am SO surprised at the negative comments on this city. We spent nearly three weeks looking for a home and had many choices. We have an excellent realtor who showed us the parks, up and coming Ford's Colony, the Dunn Center, the new 85,000 square foot YMCA, beautiful parks and so much more. Not to mention how very friendly the people are. I received a very good six figure job offer and was somewhat fearful of signing the contract once it was sent to me. I had come to the forum and seen nothing but negative comments regarding Rocky Mount. When we arrived a few weeks ago to do some house hunting, I was surprised. There's a huge Walmart, major stores, homes being built in beautiful subdivisions. Nash Community College has a wonderful science and technology center. I would highly recommend Nash County, Nashville, and there are some areas close to Tarboro that are nice if you prefer the historic feel to a home, but I am pleased with what I have seen. I especially like the convenience of being right near I-95/64. You can take 64 right out to Nags Head area. Let me share that I lived in Raleigh from October of 2005 to March of 2007 and after receiving an offer to return for a better job, we made the decision to move. North Carolina is a beautiful state altogether. I think it depends on your lifestyle and what you make of it. My husband and I lived in Fayetteville from 1998 to 1999. We made it a point to get out on the weekends and go to Charlotte, High Point, Wilmington, Asheville and other areas. What one city doesn't offer, the other has it. You have to realize that not every city is going to have everything, but you make the best of it. A few years ago, you could not have paid me to live in Rocky Mount but after seeing it for myself, I am completely surprised at how nice it is. If there is someone who is thinking of Rocky Mount, Red Oak, Nashville, or any areas nearby, get yourself a good realtor, get the yearly "Images" magazine that profiles Rocky Mount or just come and visit and see for yourself. I am 41 and I am very picky about where I live. I was surprised at how much I liked Rocky Mount. Everyone has their own opinions, but in the end, you must decide what is best for you. By the way, did I mention the good food?!!!! If you'd like more info, send me a message. I'd love to share more.

We just moved from the Rocky Mount area...it is all in what you are wanting.
It has a decent mall for the town size, it has a great cost of living. It is central to a lot of things (close to beach, etc.), although it doesn't have a ton of things itself. Fairly nice people.
On the other hand, it has a high crime rate, poor economy, high unemployment. The biggest reason we left...BAD place to raise kids (we weren't willing to send to high private schools). Also, we enjoy outdoor/nature activities, and Rocky Mount doesn't offer a lot of that.
(and, since I worked in Nashville for 8 years, Nashville is very quaint and attractive (mostly)...I would move there or Red Oak in a heartbeat before I'd move to Rocky Mount!!)
Hope you enjoy it more than we did!!

How hillarious is Rocky Mount's slogans? They went from the city on the Rise to Remarkable Rocky Mount. And yeah, its a dying city with how bad the school systems and crime are. No way would I ever send a kid to public school there. Thats got to be hell.

This has to be a parody post. Rocky Mount has been going downhill big time even in the last 5 years, and especially over the last decade. Yet you find it nicer now than ever before? LOL!! And nobody in their right mind would ever retire in Rocky Mount, let alone Fords Colony. Thats going to be a big time failure. And then you mention good food? All Rocky Mount has is a bunch of middle american franchise restaraunts. Its pretty damn pathetic. Literally zero independant or any upscale restraunts. Thats downright emberrassing.

Rocky Mount
As I said in my original post, your lifestyle determines where you live and what city is best for you. To the previous individual who made a statement regarding what I posted, you are entitled to your own opinion. When I mentioned that "no one could have paid me to live in Rocky Mount years ago" that statement was made in honesty because I was going by what others had told me. My heart was actually set on living in Raleigh and I thought no city could compare. I, myself, had never visited Rocky Mount. I think it's important that we read these posts, respect each others opinions and be honest in what we write. In reviewing my original post, I still stand by the fact that Rocky Mount is a nice city. I also made it a point to say that Nash County, Nashville and Red Oak were the nicer areas. As far as education, not all schools are bad in Rocky Mount. Also, there is a difference in the counties of Rocky Mount. There is a big comparison between Nash County and Edgecombe County. So, again, each person has to make his/her own decision. I still say that Rocky Mount is up and coming. When I read the post from Wire120, I just can't understand why there is so much negativity. And by the way, EVERY city on the face of this earth, no matter how nice and upscale it may be, has its HIGH crime areas. There's no such place as a "perfect" city.

We also just moved here in 2005. At first I wasnt sure, but it is getting better all the time. I love it! I agree it must be in what you put into it. I have all the shopping I need and only go to Raleigh once a year at Christmas time to the "big mall" and there is a great local theatre group and the Dunn Center for the performing arts. I love my neighborhood and find that crime is only concentrated in a few of the lower income areas and that is beginning to be addressed. If the city continues with the revitalization of downtown and the people come down to support the shoppes that have opened everything will definately come together. If you come to town, go to the Farmers Market on Saturday a.m. to see what it really is like. Also remember that Capital Broadcasting in Raleigh has bought the old cotton mill and is continuing the restoration there. Times, they are achangin'!

Yes, but Rocky Mount has higher crime than just about any city in North Carolina, including DURHAM. Think about that for a second.

No offence, but you seriously have to be delusional to think Rocky Mount is a growing town. Its a dying city. Most people would agree with that. Open your eyes. Nobody is going to come to downtown Rocky Mount, no matter what they do. People are too scared no matter what you put there. If you really wanted to revitalize the downtown, you would take out the train tracks If you wanted main street to have a real downtown like atmosphere. With insanely high crime rates that Rocky Mount has, You are going to get some spill over in more suburban settings. Its already happening in some neighborhoods now. It doesnt take a genius from the ghetto to figure out that they could rip off the rich people from the suburbs.

Nasty Responses
While this is a great forum, some posts go beyond being negative. I haven't yet, and hope I never do meet some of the down right nasty people who have posted a response to this thread. Yes I realize we are all entitled to our own opinions, but that can be done in a pleasant and positive manner. I see no reason some of you have gone out of your way here to be insulting and demeaning with your responses. I'm glad these people are the exception here rather than the rule.
