Yeah, they can be pretty obvious. Anything like "Kaylee in the front office is AWESOME!!!!!!!" has got to planted.

We had 3 armed robberis and a breakin within 3 weeks back in February because the gate never worked (not that it really helped anyway).
groove1, you know that area is not in Steele Creek. No apartment complex is 100% crime free.

ctribucher - Do you know where you will be working? I think you can get a good sense of an apartment online. As you know, some pictures can be deceiving. I am always wary of complexes that only have pictures of the clubhouse or landscaping. Good luck with your search and welcome to Charlotte!

Did I say that it was? Nope. Go back and read. This is what I said: "I guess it depemds on what part of SW Charlotte".

Steele Creek and The Pointe Apartments are both in SW Charlotte though and they are really not all too far from each other anyway. And if you want to be technical, Steele Creek's boundary is Sugar Creek, just about .5 miles from the Poine Apartments. Steele Creek Residents Association

[Try rent.com they are a site that has the most choices. Apartments.com only lists companies that pay them to advertise up front so you are only seeing a limited # of choices.

I have to put in my 2cents worth here.

Firstly, about APARTMENTRATINGS.COM I love that website. We have lived in apts in major cities on the West & East Coast before moving to Charlotte. The first time we rented an apt we were desperate and under a time crunch with kids having to go back to school and not wanting to live in a hotel while we searched for a new house, so we blindly rented the first place we thought was decent. Then the problems started and it was a nightmare situation with the place and the leasing staff (eg. sudden unexplained extra fees (aka liars), no signing bonus even though they promised we would get one (aka bait & switch), bugs in the carpet, walls, cabinets(aka slumlord)). A couple of months later I found the website apartmentratings.com and couldn't believe the accuracy of the comments pertaining to my apt. complex and the surly ********* attitude of the staff. I wished I had known about the website and done the research beforehand to have avoided all the headache and heartache that we had endured. You better believe the second time around I did do my research on apartmentratings.com and googled the apartment name. Yes, it's easy to see what is a bad apt complex (eg. the forementioned one I lived in was in NJ and it had an recommendation rating of 20% and 128 comments all of which were bad). The ones that say it's a great place to live and the staff are friendly are obviously planted by the manager. Of course, people who gripe will write (usually you can tell what's a major or minor gripe that you can live with) and the people who are happy about the place probably won't write about it, but honestly I'd rather be aware of problems with a place than just crossing my fingers, hope its a good manager/place and signing the lease blindly. So definitely I would recommend Apartmentratings.com as a resource especially for people like us who have moved to cities where we didn't know anyone whatsoever (no friends, no family).

Secondly, i moved to charlotte but we never did live in an apartment but i do know the city somewhat. steele creek area is ok. not the greatest. if you're looking to live then South Park / South Charlotte is good. commute is good just take 485 to 77. don't live in Huntersville or Lake Norman it's congested, over priced and getting worse in traffic every day. Lake Norman Huntersville area if there's an accident (which happens often) on that 2 lane highway you're stuck, it's a bottleneck. We actually looked at South Park but settled just outside of Charlotte Mecklenberg County because it was closer to work. We really liked South Park and the schools there are excellent. If you have kids don't live anywhere else in the Mecklenberg county. Schools in Mecklenberg county are bad, except in South Park. If you have kids try Weddington in Union County. But, I think you mentioned you didn't have kids. We couldn't be happier where we ended up in Cabarrus County. the people are so gracious and nice. price of homes so reasonable just our whole standard of living has been fantastic. We love the community feel of this place.
Everyone is so community oriented. I have never connected so quickly with a community as I did here. I simply love it.

Myers Park has good schools and that's not in the South Park area.

There are other areas to SW Charlotte other than Steele Creek. Charlotte seems to have a lot of home invasions/auto theft never knew it was in high demand until I moved here. And these incidents are not relegated to one section of Charlotte.

Your best bet may be within close driving distance to employment as the traffic can be a little trying to say the least.
