I've been pondering doing a family tour of quaint towns in NC and SC. Specifically, I am looking for places with the small town atmosphere...a modern-day Mayberry, so to speak.
Im not sure if your just doing a vacation or a sunday drive or relocating
For the mountains
I suggest Boone dowtown very cute mountain city with old style feel.
Foothills
You cant get more Mayberry than the town it is base off of which is Mt Airy and it is just up the road from Mount Pilot (Pilot Mountain)
Piedmont
Old Salem is design just like it was when the settlers arrived in the souththey even dress in moravion attire.
Lexington NC looks like a place that time has forgot beautiful homes from the 1920's and Original courthouse is located where the square of town is and they do tours and it is a museum. Check out Lanier Hardware they have alot of items they would carry 30 years ago. And then stop by the Candy Factory it also in original buidling with original design and has antiques on display.
On the coast
I recommend New Bern or Beaufort beautiful coastal old town feel in both of these cities

So far in all of my travels of NC (mainly east of I-95) I've only ever found one small town that isn't depressed, ugly and littered with fast food joints. It's Black Creek just south-east of Wilson. You drive into the town of a few hundred, maybe a thousand, residents and it's clean and well kept. There aren't any McMansions to screw up the character of the town. All of the homes are small to medium sized and older but none seemed to be run down. Main street is right next to the railroad tracks and doesn't feature the "oh so familar" blocks of empty buildings. All of the lawns are cut and there aren't any junk cars and stuff like that. You really expect to see Opie heading to the fishing hole when you go there.
Mt. Airy may have been where Andy lived but the whole family moved to Black Creek many years ago.

There are a few great places to live Down East. You just need to find them. I've been to about 95% of them and of those I'd probably only live in 4 or 5.
