Governor Perdue said people around the country are watching the state and are confused. She said North Carolina was a progressive and a forward thinking state that stood up for civil rights. The governor said people now are asking what's going on with North Carolina and added, "We look like Mississippi."
Wow. Tough language. I tend to agree that it does paint us in a similar light as Alabama and Mississippi. A lot of people began to view NC as a more Mid-Atlantic state. This will change that somewhat.
Actually not only Mississippi but also:
Missouri
Montana
Nebraska
Nevada
North Dakota
Ohio
Oklahoma
Oregon
South Carolina
South Dakota
Tennessee
Texas
Utah
Virginia
Wisconsin
Alabama
Alaska
Arizona
Arkansas
California (with the passage of Prop 8)
Colorado
Florida
Georgia
Kansas
Kentucky
Idaho
Louisiana
Michigan
There's a good reason why Alabama & Mississippi are tossed out in these situations. If you are unsure, google George Wallace & Ole Miss in the 60s.
And we have our own claim to shame as far as politicians go, Senator NO, Jesse Helms, a raging racist especially in opposition integration, the Civil Rights Act and the Voting Rights Act. Helms tried, with a 16-day filibuster, to stop the Senate from approving a federal holiday to honor Martin Luther King, Jr.

John Edwards' was certainly a miscreant in his personal life and therefore an embarrassment to the state. But he didn't push backward policies.
