My father is giving me his old car. It was registered in NY and I need to register it here in NC. There is no place on the NY title to have the form notarized, so the notaries would not sign it. My question is if my father and I sign the title without a notary will it be accepted here in NC when I go to register the car? He is leaving to go back to NY tomorrow so I am unable to call DMV. ANyone know what I should do?

Thanks for your help

I'm really not sure. Can you print up your own document having your father turn the car over to you, then notarize that?

Anyone?

According to the NC DMV Title and Registration Manual, the title must be "properly assigned" to you - if the out-of-state title does not require notarization, it's not necessary.

Yep, You cannot notarize a title that has no requirement to be notarized. Just sign the title, get NC insurance and it should be good to go.
