what are the Big Trucking compnaies up there?...
My husband is a Diesel Mechanic, we are looking at relocating out of Florida and would like some Information on NC...
What are the local Papers?
thanks
Caterpillar has a big plant in I think, Clayton? There is heaps of trucking with i-95 and I-40 so a good diesel mech should be able to write his own ticket. Also not widely known is the widespread need for marine diesel mechs down at the coast. They make good money as there are not as many marine specialists to go around.
You're right Clodhopper it's in Clayton however, it's a new machine construction plant. On the upside though, from a search on a well used job site, diesel and heavy machine mechanics are in high demand around this area. Especially around the Raleigh area but I wouldn't move into Raleigh or Cary. They are nice but everything i've heard says real estate is very expensive there.
Theoretically, a good diesel mechanic should be able to write his/her own ticket just about anywhere ... it's a great field. The country runs on diesel. The clothes we wear, the food we eat, the medicines we depend on are trucked from somewhere. Diesel engines are in trucks and tractor trailers, government vehicles, more and more passenger vehicles, boats, generators, heavy equipment, locomotives, etc.
Unfortunately, the diesel industry has not done enough to promote itself and the employees are getting older and retiring, and the industry is rapidly changing and becoming more and more technologically advanced ... creating the need for SKILLED technicians.
There are usually way, way more jobs than there are qualified candidates.
I bet your DH will do great in a growing area like Charlotte.
Good luck!
