Anyone here in law enforcement? Was wondering what are some of the highest paying police departments in north Carolina? Also, what are some of the biggest departments? Thanks!!
The highest is Charlotte-Meckleburg, paying higher than even Troopers. The general pay hierarchy in NC is Trooper, Sheriff, City Cop. This goes in line with prestige, in general, as well. That said in some larger cities city cops may outstrip Sherrifs. Also there are other law enforcement like campus, and hospital police that are sworn officers.Civilian law enforcement work is also available aboard the State's military bases.
I'm not in law enforcement, but for what it's worth I recently saw a TV ad trying to get recruits for the Greensboro Police Dept. So apparently there is demand.
Troopers are definitely not the Highest paid (as is true for most states), starting at around $32k. Several departments within Wake County start higher, including Raleigh, Garner, Apex and Cary.

Depends on where you plan on living really. I can give you a brief overview of the Charlotte area: Charlotte-Mecklenburg police (CMPD) generally do pay the highest in the Charlotte area and surrounding counties and takes care of all the criminal type calls in all of Mecklenburg county where the area is not incorporated by another town. Charlotte is the largest city in NC and certainly Meck county, but there are several other agencies inside Meck county as well like Pineville, Davidson, Huntersville, (and there are more) etc all with their own agencies. The Mecklenburg County Sheriff runs all the courts and the jail, and handles all the civil process in the county.
However in nearby counties such as Lincoln, the only incorporated city is Lincolnton, so the Sheriff takes care of all the calls outside the city of Lincolnton, criminal and civil. This is the case in many counties.
The Highway Patrol is a statewide agency, but does not pay the highest or the lowest, and is mainly a traffic enforcement agency. The Highway Patrol works wrecks mainly on interstates or rural areas that are not incorporated by another town or city. Also, they do not take calls like domestics, robbery, etc (even if they occur on an interstate). So if you would like to work traffic collisions and work mainly traffic related calls, you should consider the Highway Patrol.
There are also "special police" companies in NC. The closest in the area I can think of is Allied-Barton company police, which works mainly on the transit areas of downtown Charlotte. These are considered "company/private/special police". (And yes you can start your own PD in NC, ofcourse you must register your company with the state which is not that easy and special police only have jurisdiction over the area where they are contracted to work and they have full police powers on that property.)
Most universities have Campus police, such as UNCC have their own police department, which as you may have guessed, take all the calls on the campus from wrecks to domestics to anything.

We are residents of Miami Fl and are looking to relocate to NC within a couple of years. My husband is a police officer for Miami dade(our largest department). We are interested in the Raleigh or Charlotte areas so will need to figure out which one works out best job wise in reference to pay etc. And go from there.
