Call me crazy but i used to have to show some ID b/f I voted. And precincts purged names off their lists and it was up to precinct chairmen to make sure everyone in their precinct was properly registered, still alive and living at the address indicated on their registration.
That process was referred to as responsible citizenship.

If you were told you had to provide Id you were misinformed by some poll worker. Updating and purging the rolls is still done, but there is a responsible process for removing names rather than the indiscriminate process occurring in Texas and other id states where folks are getting mail saying they are dead. Voter suppression is not responsible citizenship.

In NC you used to be required to produce ID to vote.
I'm pretty sure I showed ID to vote in the 2000 presidential election.
I have been voting in nc since 1996 anD have never been asked to show ID
I have been voting since . . . the Nixon years (gulp!) and yes, I had to show ID -or- present my voter registration card.
I worked at the precinct level for about 12 years, maybe longer . . . and I helped literally go from door to door and verify registration. Now, that was NOT in this county. There were rules about who was going door to door . . . it may have been that a representative from each party would go. I honestly do not remember. I just remember doing it -- a very time consuming process, but a great way to meet folks in the neighborhood!

Showing a voter registration card is a completely different issue than that of showing a photo ID to vote.
