Default No More Sweepstakes in NC

NC Courts upheld a previous ban on sweepstakes machines and it looks like they might be gone soon. I'm glad to see them go. Those places made a fortune by ripping people off.

Thanks for the link. As a newcomer to NC, i could not figure out why these places were in business. Based on the explanation, it seems like gambling to me.

The recent spate of sweepstakes shops getting knocked over probably had something to do with it.

No. The law was the only thing looked at by the Supreme Court who didn't agree with the Court of Appeals.

Oh cool, you're on the state Supreme Court. I always wondered, what's the proper honorific title for you guys?

Normally I despise government intervention but I'm glad these are being shut down. They're nothing more than blight.

These types of gambling establishments have always been against the law, but the vending companies try to exploit perceived loopholes.

These businesses were also siphoning off money from the lottery and we all know who benefits from the lottery. It doesn't really matter to me one way or the other. I don't hang out in the part of town where they're located at, so I don't have to look at them anyway. In an entire year, I don't spend 5 bucks on any kind of gambling. My wife and I may buy a lottery ticket or two when the prize gets up into the hundreds of millions.

Like Smith Barney used to say...

I make money the old fashioned way... I earn it.

Hardly, lottery sales are up and the number of retailers continues to grow.

When people figure this stuff up they always forget to account for the population increase in their equations. Factor in the population growth and the numbers don't change much.
