Another large hole may open up in NC's already porous safety net.

This might really increase poverty and homelessness.

New attitude, business yes, families no.

If you get laid off here, you may well lose your home, your transportation, and your reserve funds.

Economist: Triangle could take 40 percent of new N.C. jobs - Business - NewsObserver.com

Anyway, what makes a new job "solid" in the 21st century?

A solid job used to be a state job.

With the new governor who wants to "fix" everything and has pledge not to increase taxes, he has only one option: layoffs, layoffs, and more layoffs. Following his party's philosophy, he will dismantle the government, privatize what it can (giving contracts to his donors so they can make money off the taxpayer), and then we'll learn why we paid taxes in the first place as parts of the government disappear.

How will it affect you? Look at what the government handles (state and local) in the left column at this census link:
http://www2.census.gov/govs/apes/11stlnc.txt They are all necessary departments that affect most of us on a daily basis.

So all those layoffs will result in local people seeking other jobs in an already not-so-great economy. So, yes, absolutely, before you move here, make sure YOU have a solid-as-possible job...whatever that is in the 21st century.

Should be an interesting year.

And here is the problem

Decades of failed democrat philosophy. Thinking the goverment should be the employer.

Elections have consequences. Your side failed in governing and lost the election.

North Carolina voters have spoken, thank God.

Firefighters, police officers, and teachers are among the very many employees of the government.

Will you be volunteering your time to fight fires, maintain law and order, and fix roads?

Of course the state is an employer.

Your taxes go to maintain your city and state.

Those who are so bothered that their tax money is going toward the undeserved are usually the same people who are on disability or retired.

The money that was taken from you in the form of taxes when you worked went to the older people who retired while you were working. The money YOU are making now from Social Security is from the TAXES of the people who are working NOW.

I think all retired people who complain about taxes should voluntarily give all that tax money back that they're getting through Social Security.

There's some odd wording in that story:

Quote:
Walden predicts the Research Triangle will take between 33 percent and 40 percent of all new jobs in North Carolina this year.
How about "will produce" 33-40 percent of all new jobs?

Unless, of course, the author is attempting to bias his readers against the Triangle for some reason...

A 'journalist' wouldn't do something like that, would he?

EDIT: Upon further review, is "will take" a southernism of which I'm not aware (kind of like "put back" for saving or setting aside)? If so, what is its meaning?

No--and for that matter, I am not really familiar with "put back"; I would say "put away".

I thought it was an awful waste of an article. It didn't answer: Why? Why not Charlotte? Which jobs? Which industries? Those are all questions anyone would wonder.
