I am renting a house in Fayetteville, and I called the realty agency that is handling the property to ask if I will be able to renew my lease which ends May 31st, the agent told me that she would contact the owner then get back to me. She did not get back to me so I called her again several days after that and she told me that the owners are not sure if they will renew the lease since they want to sell the house and want to put it back on the market. She talked about the possibility of me continuing to rent the house while it was on the market but I told her I was not interested in that since there would be people in and out of the house when I would not be there. Again she told me that she would talk to the owners and get back to me about if I will be able to renew my lease. That has been 1-2 weeks ago.

My question is, can they wait to the very last minute and just tell me I have to move? I have started packing and looking for other houses just in case but this is very frustrating. Does NC have any type of regulations on a notification period where owners/agencies have to give tenants reasonable notice before terminating the lease?

After the lease expires you will be on a "month to month" tenancy.
They (any you) will be required to give 30 days notice.

That's probably a good idea.

I'm a property manager and RE Broker in Fayetteville. You should check your lease. There should be specific language that states the notice needed to terminate or renew at the end of the lease. I do 30 days on my leases some do 60 days. Hold them to that number of days. After the lease expires Mr. Rational is correct; Month to month is 30 day notice. Better start looking for a new place.
