Does anyone have any ideas for the best vacation spots in NC? We are looking for small to moderate sized cities/towns that have unique, walkable shopping areas ("old town" or "main st" kind of feel) and things for kids to do. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.

What are you more interested in visiting, a mountain or coastal town?

Edenton fits the bill...they have a waterfront park kids love with the ability to fish. There is a movie theater and a number of restaurants, shops, coffee shops in their downtown...its very walkable.

They also have the Edenton Steamers, a summer league baseball team owned by the town. The stadium is right next to the High School and right on Main Street. Here's the schedule...

2013 Schedule

There is a Hampton Inn that you can stay in...if you don't want the kids to stay in a B&B. Lots of Historic stuff to look at while you are there.

You can also visit the Hope Plantation in nearby Windsor and visit the Livermon Park & Zoo in downtown Windsor which is a free playground and zoo.

Visit legendary Bunn's barbecue next door and there is canoe's you can use to go down the Cashie River.

The Official Travel & Tourism Website for North Carolina has lots of info. Generally speaking most folks vacation either in the mountains or at the beach. Wilmington has a nice riverfront area to walk around in and is in close proximity to Wrightsville Beach as well as Carolina & Kure Beaches. Asheville, Boone and Blowing Rock are all great mountain towns.

Beaufort NC (est 1709) is gorgeous and loaded with historic preservation and has the advantage of the nearby Outer Banks: Beaufort, North Carolina - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Wilmington NC is much larger than Beaufort and to me is similar to Charleston SC but not as large or as grand, with beautiful Wrightsville, Carolina, and Kure Beaches close by: Wilmington, North Carolina - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
