I strongly support buying US made items wherever possible. I just received a catalog showing a ladderback chair made in North Carolina. Does anyone know if the chairs could be purchased locally from the manufacturers outlet? They have turned finials, woven paper seats, and are painted in colonial colors like cranberry, navy and olive. pictures on this site: Ladderback Seating Collection | Sturbridge Yankee Workshop

You might want to call them and ask - or put a question on their Facebook page. Sturbridge is located in Maine, btw.

I also found a
youtube video

from Sturbridge about these chairs.

Here is the website for the manufacturer, J H Craver They are located in Yadkinville, NC and you may be able to order from them directly. Here is their facebook page, which indicates that they have a factory outlet store that is open to the public.

It also appears that FurnitureLand South in High Point can order these for you. We bought an entire house full of furniture from them earlier this year and their prices were pretty hard to beat. We've been happy with the post sales service as well. PM me if you want the name of the great salesperson we used.

Thank you for the reference to J H Craver and their factory outlet. We may order something to replace the motley collection of uncomfortable kitchen chairs.

My pleasure, GoldenAge. I've received excellent advice from you in the past, and it was fun using my googling skills to get some information for you!

You are welcome. This is still a family business I think.

Something interesting about the furniture industry, which has been a mainstay of NC's economy, is that the manufacturing that remains is more focused now on the higher end, heirloom quality pieces. The disposable, low-end Ikea grade stuff (with some exceptions) is what's being made in Asia (China and increasingly SE Asia- Indonesia, Philipines, etc.) or Central/South America.

There has actually been increased demand for high end furniture made in NC by wealthier Asian customers, so there's quite a bit of export opportunity for high quality NC furniture. This may be a little old, but it's still accurate:
