This is too EASY. Given the small town/southern rural roots of NC (and the number of national championships in college b-ball), the vast majority will say college basketball hands down. Only within the shadows of downtown Charlotte's skyscrapers will you find a majority of North Carolinians who feel otherwise (and many of them aren't natives to this state in the first place).
Also, pro basketball (on a National level) suffers from the image of "rich thugs" who are over-paid and simply lack the talent of those pros who played decades ago. I'll save that argument for another thread.
Back to the topic of NC
If the Hornets were called the "North Carolina Hornets" (hint hint) and won 4 NBA championships over the span of a decade, then everything I just posted above would be moot. In the event of the Hornets bringing championship fever to NC at the professional level, the status quo of Duke/Chapel Hill would have to share the spot light. For our Triangle residents who seem to get some type of weird ego boost from college level basketball (LOL), let's just hope that the Hornets never become champions.
There's a bit of irony in all of this though. The greatest basketball player out of NC owns the Charlotte Hornets, resides in a condo uptown, and would love to bring a pro basketball championship to his home state. Little does he realize that "some" folks in our Triangle region (the same region he attended school) would hate him for doing such a thing because in their minds, it would only benefit Charlotte (their most hated city on the planet).

This is a tough question. It reminds me of another inquiry for which I struggle to find an answer....do people from Boston prefer the Yankees or the Redsox?!

The Hornets will need to win championships or have some very successful seasons in order to rival UNC/Duke in popularity in NC.
