-Gay people who can now get full legal marriage recognition in 13 states and DC
-Women who might want access to abortion that's not constantly being undermined (or women's health care providers who don't like working in such a "Big Brother" climate)
-Anyone worried about needing more than the amount of Unemployment NC now pays (shortest in the whole US)
-Anyone who might qualify for expanded Medicaid in states that expanded it, but not here.
Of course, the current GOP would cheer any of these demographics leaving NC, so it plays right into their hands.
When folks leave, NC will have a lot of low-paying jobs on its hands. Whose going to serve them at Mcd's and clean their public restrooms?
I found the NYT article depressing. My wife loves the Smoky Mts and we were thinking of moving from Virginia in a couple of years since Virginia is moving backward. I was hoping North Carolina would be devolving less than Virginia, but it appears NC is devolving into a southern backwater faster than Virginia. How depressing
I hope things change soon. I am looking (in the next 5 years) to relocate from New Jersey. I'm a music teacher and was hoping to have better arts programs in the South, albeit a cut in pay. I hope it's not true that teachers with Master's degrees will receive no extra benefits. I just can't see remaining in New Jersey where the arts are being cut, my area is heavily overcrowding quickly and the pace is just too fast. I was hoping to find somewhere along the coast (within 20 minutes from the beach) with mild weather and land where I can build a home. Looks like my search continues elsewhere unless things improve.
I have to tell you that the arts program always gets the worst cuts . our art teacher (middle school) has under a dollar per year per student. they do a lot pencil and paper projects. because there is simply no money. apparently NC is one of the worst places for teachers.
which is so sad when everyone keeps on saying, that our children are our future ...
That's no mystery to anyone with friends with graduate degrees.
I barely know anyone with a college degree who is Republican.
The only discernible pattern I can distill from who's Republican versus Democrat versus Independent stems mostly from economic or religious standing. All of the people in my life who are staunch Republicans already have "theirs" (money, property, standing) and don't want to support people who don't have the necessary skills, motivation, perspective, means or ability to also get "theirs". They don't care to differentiate between someone who desires a welfare-funded life and someone who works two minimum wage jobs to try and support themselves if both require public assistance of some sort. And the devout Christians need to be Republican in order to find political support for their moral code regarding same-sex marriage and abortions (and yes, I know, there are anomalies out there but please don't argue that this is an unfair generalization).
The more I learn about politics, the more rhetoric I hear spewed forth from both sides of the aisle the more I want to watch cartoons.
When you consider how much activity has happened in just over six months in Raleigh, I don't think November 2014 will see a change. By that time many of the ones who would vote them out will likely have relocated to elsewhere, if not disenfranchised (thinking of the college voting/dependent tax connection).
When you consider how much has happened in such a short time, I shudder to think about what the next year holds. Maybe this is part of their strategy do as much as they can, as soon as they can, to make NC unattractive to their political opposition.
(...the more educated a person is, typically the more left-leaning they are politically)
That is one of the dumbest statements of all time. Anywhere.
You have no evidence of this.
Admittedly liberals think they are smarter but that is just because they are arrogant and too self righteous to recognize the idiocy of most of their positions.
I would say most left leaning people are left oriented because they are uneducated, poor, comfortable on the federal or state dole. Do you really believe these folk, who routinely vote dem and are liberal in all their endeavors are the ones that are smart.
First, I did NOT that that "liberal"--> "smarter". I said that "more educated"--> "more liberal". "if A, then B" is not the same as "if B, then A" (elementary logic). Others have pointed to evidence showing this to generally be true. That does not mean that EVERY "liberal" is more educated (never mind "smarter").
For example, I once saw a breakdown of quintiles based on education vs party affiliation.
The top quintile and the bottom quintile are more likely to be Democratic, the 3 middle ones more likely to be Republican. This goes with what I said about the most educated people (top quintile) more likely to be progressive. Again, I didn't say that being progressive means you're smarter. Obviuosly a lot of Blue votes come from inner-city blighted poor areas, too, with almost no education. But among the highest-educated, you'll find more progressives than conversatives; that's what I said.
The very widespread disappointment with President Obama will doom NC Dems in 2014. I am really afraid it will be worse..more rabid right wingers.
Like it or not, that is how it will be. Shudder to think.
