When I first was told we were moving to nc I was very happy. Maybe it's just this area I stay in but ppl are very rude! Racism is very high I have never been assaulted by being called out of name until I moved here. So much tension here I feel like I steped back in time. I'm just so dissapointed with this state and can't wait to leave.
tierra, so sorry you have had such a negative experience. Where are you headed? If you have no specific location in mind, come on up to the Triangle and check it out. I think you'll find things much different in the Raleigh/Durham area.
I have not found that to be the case with the military affiliated members of the Fayetteville community. I have noticed some disturbing old-fashioned attitudes from some of the locals. I have experienced a few mostly older white folks in NC and SC deny any particular outward prejudice but then proceed to drop the "N" word in jest or conversation. It never fails to surprise me when it happens from seemingly nice educated people.
My wife used to work in Customer Service at one of the main PX's on post and most of the supervisors were local African Americans. She was discriminated against and other AA employees were shown favoritism although my wife was a supervisor at AFFES in Germany for several years and knew the job inside and out. It got so bad she moved locations. It worked out for the best she later got into real estate and is much more suited to that line of work.
I'm in a mixed marriage and work and socialize with a wide variety of people being in the USAF for 24 years taught me to judge people by their character. We don't let a few ignorant folks get us down.
I live in CT and I hear the N word all the time. It's not North Carolina. It just depends if you happen to be in the wrong area at the wrong time. I wouldn't call the whole state out just because of some racist encounters. Your letting them "win" by leaving. What kind of bad experiences did you actually have?
Sorry to hear about your experiences. I'm African American, lived in the Carolinas my entire life, and I've never been directly or indirectly called anything racist (I've actually seen it more online than I've heard it spoken). I'm not familiar with the Fayetteville area, but I've heard it can be very conservative. Know that NC is a diverse state and like stewarthaas said, you're letting them win by leaving. If anything, they're the losers.
I'm sorry to hear you're disappointed, OP. Down here in Jacksonville, we're just as G.I.'d out as you are in Fayetteville. However, in the short time I've been here; I couldn't help but notice how well the races seem to blend together; lots of politeness and good manners mixed in with the saggy Fubu pants and cowboy boots. I like it.
Maybe you should consider another community close to Bragg, if you're military affiliated? If you've only been here a short time, maybe you might want to give it a little longer. I hope it works out better for you.......

" Southern Hospitality " in 2010 and for the 12 years that I've been here, is a myth. Or a legend.
If it ever existed at all.
Nice, polite, friendly Southern people are no more or no less friendly and hospitable; than, friendly, nice, polite, hospitable people from the North or people from anywhere else.
