Any suggestions?
I've only been in RDU a short time, but I think Fayetteville is at least a good hour or more away from the Triangle. Also, and I haven't confirmed this, but a few sources of mine have indicated that Fayetteville is dull, and has a gang and crime problem. Not really where I would want to be. Schools? Well, haven't heard any commentary, and that may be a bad thing. I dunno. However, I assume that they probably don't attract the best teachers since more money can be presumedly made up toward Cary and Raleigh. Again, no confirmation, just informal comments from people I've met.

[quote=katie;271]My family and I are relocating to North Carolina and have seen many apartment/homes for rent that look wonderful. We would like an area that has a really good high school where newcomers would be welcome, a town with activities for youth. My husband has his own computer business and I am a store manager so something not extremely remote but not in the center of the city. I have choices of Taylorsville, Lenoir, Gastonia, Raleigh, Jacksonville, Asheboro, Apex and Yanceyville. It is hard to choose from up here in Massachusetts. Any knowledge of these towns would be helpful. Look forward to hearing from you.[/QUO

We have decided to relocate to Morganton. This town is close to Lenior. It is know for having a great school system and promotes cotinuing education for all. They have a low crime rate. The population is around 17000 and Morganton is located a short distance from larger cities - 40 minutes to Asheville, 30 minutes to Hickory, 1 hour to Charlotte, about 45 minutes to all the ski resorts. Healthcare is good.
We are from Florida. Hope this helped. I think Morganton is a charming town - it was rated one of the best small towns to raise a family. Cary is another larger city that I would look into.

Hi Nancy;
I currently live in CA, but am relocating in the spring/summer. I work with a relocation specialist, his email is: www.jason@luxurymovers.com

The company is great and has won many awards in the last few months.
Try them, they sure are making things easy for me.

Hi, we relocated to Taylorsville last year, our kids were upset leaving their friends back in Florida . . . . . well, we are unfortunately being transferred and the kids don't want to leave.

The high school is amazing, and has so many events and even cultural activities going on. Sports is big here . . . and there are so many 4-H clubs, my kids are doing archery, horseback riding, community service.

The churches have open gym once a week and once or twice a week basketball for the community, and you do not have to belong to the church to be active. All in all, we have made better friends here in 1 year, than 18 years in Florida. The library is also great for the kids and has alot of programs, which I was suprised for such a small town.

Another thing, we have a small YMCA, that has bought land and is building a an extremely large facility and aquatic complex, there is even a small waterpark right here in town, go-carts, ATV trails, and my kids are doing things that they never did before.

I did cry the first month I was here because I wasn't used to small town living, I'm from NY originally, but now, I would never live in a big city again.

Also, when we want to go the mountains, Boone, Blowing Rock, Ashe County -- West Jefferson, we are less than 45 minutes away.

It's a beautiful area and I have seen more different color trees and flowers this spring and this fall that are breathtaking.

My parents and aunt wanted to relocate here before we found out about the transfer . . . . .the town has a website where you can learn more.

You can also go to the website called The Spilled Bean, it's a coffee/internet shop that serves breakfast lunch and dinner, but they have a lot of new artists coming and perfoming on weekends, and they hold board game nights once a week, and have alot of activities for all ages.

Other than that, there is NO nightlife in this town, you need to drive 20-25 minutes to Hickory for that. There are not movie theatres or bowling, also need to drive to Hickory, Wilkesboro or Statesville for that all 20 minutes or so away . . . . but there are no lines or traffic here, and yes, after a year, many people know your name . . . . I'm going to really miss it here.

Joanne,

You might want to pop over to the "Raleigh, Durham, Chapel Hill, Cary - The Triangle Area" forum and poke around and ask over there. Many more folks from in and around Clayton are to be found.

I'm 51, have no degree and lost my job after getting here last year. I got another job at my previous pay in 3 months. Not bad.

Katie, which towns in MA or So. NH do you find fit you best? I am originally from the Lowell area and grew up near Worcester. the type of town that you like will somewhat drive where you should look. If you're more a city person, I would stay close in to Raleigh or Durham. There are more jobs around RDU and Charlotte than you will find around Asheville or Greensboro. The stretch between Greensboro and Durham is where we wound up moving because we wanted a small town within a reasonable commute to the jobs and cities.

ALso be aware that the school issue is a two-edged sword. There are towns here with good schools but they may not have as many programs as a lot of metro-Boston schools. Of course, they don't have annual Prop. 2 1/2 overrides, either Wake County will have financing problems with the growth in the school system.

Hi, Joanne,
Keep in mind where your job will be. If you're going to strike out toward Garner, Smithfield, etc. you will probably be good. The commute to RTP from south of Raleigh can be bad by the standards here (but still nothing like I-84 through Hartford ) US 70 is a bottleneck but they are working on the traffic flow there. Look at it during the commute hours to see if it's something that you can live with. BTW, my wife's cousin lives in Clayton (outskirts, Johnson Co.), he's from Boston and finds US70 to be a pain during the commute.

YMMV.
