Teacher looking to relocate with family (Charlotte, Columbia: how much, house, public school)

Hi,
My family and I are looking to relocate to NC. I don't like the extreme cold weather and my husband doesn't like the heat. We're looking for someplace nice with good schools for both myself and my kids. Any suggestions?? Thanks

I see that no one has responded to you. I too am a teacher from Indiana and find it a bit hard for someone to help with questions about teaching in NC. Here's what I suggest...

1. Go back to pg. 51 in the forum threads and read past questions and comments on what you want to learn. Work your way backwards for more info like 51, 50, etc.

2. Notice that there is MUCH over crowding in many school areas. This is due to the huge population boom that NC is getting. NC starts you at a state set salary. Like a teacher with 0-1 years of experience will start at around $28,000. Depending on what area you want to teach in, also depends on how much you will get in supplement pay and bonuses. Some areas will give you like $2,000-3,000 or more in extra pay, sign on bonus, etc. Do your research. There is a reason why some of these districts do this.

3. You can look at more info at Teach 4 North Carolina.

4. I like how they support their teachers here and Ron Clark got his start in NC also. I have read many threads on the areas and the schools and I still don't know what to do. I like east Tenn. Some have suggested the west northern tip of SC under Charlotte is a better place to teach at.

Compared to what? The last NEA salary report I saw had NC ranked 29th out of 51 (50 states and the District of Columbia). Florida was ranked below NC. Salaries have increased since that time and NC is probably at or very close to the national average.

and for what it is worth they are really trying to raise the teachers salaries here in Charlotte.

Not sure how salaries compare with Florida, but I just sold a house to two math schoolteachers that relocated from Florida -- each had two interviews at two schools in Union County and were offered jobs at both schools. They were planning to move next year, but ended up moving within a couple of weeks...my guess is that even though salary might be lower they could get more house for the money here. Yes, thanks again for all your helpful replies. The cost of living definitely helps with the salary being "lower" than we'd like.

You can get lots of home for the money in NC. As for salaries the starting state salary is 28,000. I just found out yesterday that depending on the county you work in they offer seperate stipends. Wake & Macklenburg County have the highest stipends. They would bring your salary to roughly 36,000 or 37,000 for first year.. Not bad in comparison to FL. FL teacher salaries are just around the same in Central FL between 34,000 and 36,000 except cost of living is threw the roof.. Hope this helps..
